[users@httpd] 2.0.48 : httpd no longer answering requests

Hi,

I am experiencing a severe problem with Apache 2.0.48 running on HP Tru64
v5.1B with worker MPM. When this problem appeared is not clear but now, one
or 2 time a day httpd is no longer answering requests. The only way to
clear the problem seems to restart httpd (graceful restart is ok). This
problem seems a bit similar to Peter Poter Veestergaard's post "http server
hangs on non consuming client", except the platform is not at all the
same...

At the time the problem occurs, there is generally not a lot of
connections. But it seems the server will never recover by itself (I
already waited for hours...). It doesn't seem to time out at some point. I
thought about lowering 'Timeout' value from default value (300) but this is
just a workaround and I am not sure it will improve anything as this 'hang'
doesn't seem to timeout.

There is no error message in any Apache (or system) log files. There are
some times (but not always) error messages about 'Too many open files' in
apr_accept in the hour before but I don't think it is related (this is not
close enough to the error).

We checked a lot of things in the network configuration and tunning and
this doesn't seem to be related to a system configuration issue. I'd
appreciated any help on how to get more useful information on what is
happening, what is httpd state, ... (tcpdump, force httpd coredump...???).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Michel
