Anybody Out There Trying to use Forte for Struts Apps?
Do any of you use Struts inside of FFJ 3.0 EE (EA)? Since the
tomcat-apache.conf file gets created everytime you run FFJ's internal
Tomcat, is it impossible to register the Handler for the ".do" actions
coming from the client JSPs?

Hi Marcel
Yes you are right, you do not need to install Tomcat separately. I did that
to simply extract the source code and web application files from
struts-example.war.

Re: Page-by-Page Iterator Pattern

For what it's worth: I keep track of what page I'm on via request
params. Every time the page is requested I rerun the query from scratch
and limit the reported results according to the page number and number
of items. No caching, so performance probably could be improved, OTOH I
don't have to think about cache coherency.

Here is a url that describes the Page-by-Page Iterator.
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/blueprints/design_patterns/page_by_page_iterator/in
dex.html
I am getting close to having this implemented with struts. Curious to know
whether anyone else has used this pattern to browse data, or how they are
browsing data without bringing back all of the rows from the database.
There are some caching mechanisms to consider here as well.
Thanks,
Kent

Actually, in 'Core J2EE Patterns' we describe a useful pattern name 'Value List
Handler'.
The Blueprint group describes a pattern used in the PetStore application called
'page by page iterator'. It is a pattern which is based on the same idea as
'Value List Handler', which can be seen in the 'Also Known As' section of their
pattern, where they mention 'Value List Hander' from 'Core J2EE Patterns'.
ie:
Page-by-Page Iterator
...
Also Known As
Paged List (in a previous version of this pattern), Value List Handler [J.
Crupi, D. Malks, D. Alur. Sun Java Center J2EETM Patterns.

Hope this helps to clarify,

"Where is it defined?"
My guess would be in the "Core J2EE Patterns" or the "GoF" books.

Page-by-Page Iterator Pattern
Posted by Kent Roylance <ro...@home.com>.
Has anyone used the Page-by-Page Iterator with struts? I have reviewed the
pattern and in the process of trying to implement a web solution using this
pattern. I am looking for any insight on the best way to implement this
pattern with struts. An example would also be great. This would be a great
example to include with the struts install. I am also looking at the J2EE
Petstore example to figure out the best way to implement this. I guess this
Page-by-Page Interator Pattern evolved from the Value List Handler pattern.
Appreciate any help,
Kent

Why did you install Tomcat separately? It's included in FFJ3EA.
And you don't have to change the projects directory, allthough it might be
convenient. You can mount any (Struts) web-app.
Despite the above, thanks for the effort of creating the HOWTO, can't have
enough of them.

Hi All,
I have put up a HOWTO article on my site.
http://home.iprimus.com.au/moktc/howto/struts/howto_forte_struts.htm
This article show you how you can setup and debug STRUTS example
application. Hope it can be helpful to you.

RE: Anybody Out There Trying to use Forte for Struts Apps?
Posted by Marcel Maré <mj...@webtothemax.com>.
I can easily run Struts inside FFJ3EA. Just mount your (struts) webapp and
you are all set. I really don't know how other people manage without a
debugger.
It all works fine except that you're stuck with Tomcat 3.2 for the moment
(not a big problem). So develop with FFJ/Tomcat deploy on Tomcat/Apache.
The only snag is that FFJ3ea will bomb my PC when stopping the FFJ Tomcat
server, once every x times ( 2 < x < 200); not even a cosy BSOD.
Lemmie know if you need more
