[Start Page - welcome module] update content

Hi All,

I’m planning to work on “Start Page” - welcome module

As it makes the welcome impression of Apache NetBeans IDE, I hope it would
be better we discuss here to make it more useful.

Please take following points into your consideration and provide your
feedback.

1.Top Bar

   a. The logo needs to be replaced with now one

   b. The link associated with the logo points to the old web site need to
be replaced with new URL (pull request #583)

2.Bottom Bar

a. Left end displays old cube logo, but meant to be oracle logo as the link
points to their web. Do we need to have it there or remove it? else replace
with something? if so, with what?

b. Right end displays old cube logo, but meant to be Java logo as the link
points to java page at Oracle Technology Network, I assume, having java
logo would be okay. is there any restriction on placing the java logo
there? should the link be the same or somewhere else to be pointed?

   c. in the middle, do we need to display some text containing apache
copyright or something? if so, what is your suggestion?

3. Learn & Discover Tab

   a. "Take a tour" link points to old web contains a set of screencasts -
I do not feel a need to change this, as the page is still very useful.

   b. "Try Sample Project" opens new project wizard with samples section
expanded - That is the expected behavior

   c. "What's New" points to NewAndNoteWorthy page of the old web - this
can be replaced with NetBeans page at apache blog. or else, Please suggest
a URL

   d. "Community Corner" points to community page of the old web - can be
replaced with community page of new web

   e. links under "Demos & Tutorials" - points to KB of the old web
containing many useful resources - we may keep this as it is

   f. "Featured Demo" - Please suggest a new demo

4. My NetBeans Tab

   a. Recent Projects - behaves the way it should

   b. Install Plugins - opens the "Available Plugins" tab as expected

5. What's New Tab

   a. News & Tutorials

       i. News loads from netbeans.org/community/news - what about contents
from NetBeans page at apache blog?

ii. All Tutorials Link points to netbeans.org/kb/kb.html which says
No articles - can be pointed to KB of old web contains useful
"Documentation, Training & Support" resources.

   b. Blogs contents loaded from planetnetbeans.org - should it be replaced
with NetBeans page at apache blog?

I have a patch that replaces that with a link to apache.org and the Apache feather logo.

I'm waiting on http://reviews.apache.org to work so I can post the patch.

I'll review the rest of the email and reply later. Indeed, many things to change in that module.

Hi Oliver,
Yes, That idea is great.
Having a generic version for the platform and an extended one for IDE would
make it more reusable when it comes to custom platform apps.

Hi Thilina,

I like the idea to keep the welcome module.

In some of my platform apps I have used an adapted version this code too.

>It is a pity that Welcome module is not well configurable so it needs to be >doubled and
patched and it has some unwanted dependencies. E.g. it has a >dependency to Project GUI
and its api.

Some years ago Jaruslav recomment me to separate the module into two:

welcome.core
welcome.projects.

It will be great if we cauld split the project GUI dependency by splitting into two modules.

The next week I am very busy but the week after maybe I can take some time.

best regards
Oliver

Hello Gj,

As you suggested in the PR, I placed the new logo on the start page.

Yes, that's a complete other task.

Let's keep it as focused and minimal as possible for the moment.

Hello,

Thanks for the info, Sure I will keep that in mind. Doing it in an HTML way
would be great.
Another suggestion by Oliver is to separate the module into two. It is
better if we can combine both options. (HTML and separate modules)

What about the release of NetBeans 9? Actually, My intention is to put some
effort to update the existing module as much as possible before the 9
released to the public.

Kind Regards,

Not sure that does make sense until there's a usable backup way to do this
without JavaFX. At the time I asked about options to open in user's
browser, but to be as functional might require an alternative to the
DukeScript browser presenter, which is GPL.

Best wishes,

AW: [Start Page - welcome module] update content

Posted by Christian Lenz <ch...@gmx.net>.
Hey,

we had some discussion months ago, to refactor the whole startpage module, to use HTML4J to make an HTML Version, which makes more sense as it is atm. So me as a frontend Dev can work on a separated page, and integrated into that model, we have the ability to call the functions for open Project, or whatever we want.

Maybe you can Keep that in mind. Only to let you know that. But Maybe, it is a complete other Task.

Cheers

Maybe use the Apache Incubator logo and point to the incubator site?

Don't add anything.

OK for now. Will have to be replaced in the future once the site is donated too.

Note: Oracle will have to donate the contents (such as these screencasts) too.

OK.

Not sure... Maybe https://blogs.apache.org/netbeans/ ?

Indeed, use https://netbeans.apache.org/community/index.html

It might be good to comments links to applications Apache NetBeans doesn't support so far, like PHP / JavaEE.

> f. "Featured Demo" - Please suggest a new demo

This seems to be taken at runtime from http://www.netbeans.org/demos.xml

We need to move this resource to netbeans.apache.org and decide what to put there.

Maybe load stuff from Twitter? (Or some RSS from netbeans.apache.org we sync up with the @netbeans twitter account ?)

We don't have that many sources for news/blogs/tutorials...

We might get right of this button if we have no resources to point people to.

I think so.
