Need to checkout a single file from SVN

Hi,

I need to checkout a single file from SVN but I'm not able to. I'm using SVN 1.4.2. Searched the internet for this but found that I can not checkout a single file. This facility is not available at all...

This seems to be a glaring miss if that is true. Do I have to checkout the whole folder/directory, even if I need a small document?

yes.

Perhaps you could compensate by organizing your repository so that you don't
have so many unrelated files together in one directory.

If using http(s) access via Apache module, you can always get the
contents of a single repository item by its URL.

But as Ben says, if you're doing this often, you may want to rethink
your repo layout or workflow.

As others have mentioned, this is currently not possible, however you can export a single file. The result won't be a working copy though and you will not be able to commit any changes.

What may seem like a glaring miss is a deliberate design decision by the svn team. Among the reasons is the fact that svn needs some place to store its working copy informations and these reside in a hidden folder inside the working copy - that why the working copy needs to be at least one folder. The upcoming sparse directory support may help solving the issue...
