SA 3.3.0 depends on Perl 5.10 (FreeBSD Ports)???

I tried to upgrade from SA 3.2.5 to 3.3.0 by installing the newer one from
FreeBSD Ports. It seems that at least the Ports version thinks that the
latest SA requires perl 5.10.x, rather than 5.8.9, which I was already
using. Installing from ports automatically installs perl 5.10.1 which
causes spamc children to run wild and basically, spamd can't cope with it.

I don't need or want perl 5.bleeding.edge, 5.8.9 was working just fine. I
tried doing a 'make clean' then removing 5.10 and correcting all the
symlinks to point to 5.8.9, I tried running use.perl system, but SA just
keeps looking for 510 and installing it when it doesn't find it.

Reading the SA docs, it doesn't seem to require anything later than
5.8.8...can anyone clue me in as to how to tell the ports version of it to
use 5.8.9? Or should I just use the source directly?

I did not do a portupgrade of any kind, simply "make deinstall; make
clean; make build; make install". I also did a "make deinstall" of
ports/lang/perl5.10.1 before this, but the SA port kept trying to install
5.10.1 as a dependency, even though 5.8.9 was already installed.

In any case, building and installing from tarball solved the problem.

I am the port maintainer for SA for Freebsd, and there is no such
requirement.
I have upgraded hundreds of systems, some with 5.8.8, some with 5.8.9,
some with 5.10.
I have upgraded with portupgrade. I have created packages with
portupgrade -p and upgraded with portupgrade -PP.

If you can reproduce the problem, go to www.freebsd.com/support and open
a PR.
Be specific, show EXACTLY how you reproduced the problem, what os, what
version, etc.

(or, if you used portupgrade -R, you told freebsd to upgrade perl since
it is a dependency. It just did what you told it to do)

I had trouble with that line in the rc.conf with some older version of SA
long ago, so put it in local/rc.d/sa-spamd. As you noted, this burned me
because installing a new port of SA overwrites that file, which didn't
occur to me ahead of time. Oops.

See my previous email...even after deinstalling perl 5.10 and cleaning SA
in ports, it would still list 5.10 as a dependency...I'm not entirely sure
how the SA port determines what version of perl is already installed, if
any.

Good point...I will probably go back and re-try putting the flags where
they belong in /etc/rc.conf and see how it goes.

Actually, I didn't have enough with 5. I posted this a couple of minutes
after raising it to 30, but I should have just waited several more
minutes; things calmed way down and look fine now. It was using well over
a dozen children for a while, and now is at just a few.

Note that I did not raise the min children, only the max. Trouble really
starts when it hits the max.

sa-spamd doesn't define the number of children, if you want spamd to
start with non-default settings you can define spamd_flags in rc.conf

Sounds like a bodge to me, and presumably it's using perl 5.8 because
you replaced perl not because you installed SA manually.

By the look of it you are using way too many spamd children.

I actually meant spamc's that had no spamd children to talk to. It seems
the ports version of SA replaced my original sa-spamd startup script,
which raised the max children from (default?) of 5 to 30. I just
reinstalled 3.3.0 from source instead of ports and fixed the startup
script, so now it uses perl 5.8.9, yet it still seems to be using a lot

SpamAssassin's port makefile has "USE_PERL5_RUN= 5.8.8+", so it should
work with 5.8.9, but if you build SA without perl installed, the
default perl version of 5.10 is installed as a dependency. The
correct way to revert to 5.8.9 is to remove 5.10 and put 5.8.9 back
before reinstalling SA. However there may be a port in your system
that needs 5.10+ - possibly a new SA dependency.

FWIW I've been using 5.10 for a year without any problems, it's now
the default in FreeBSD and FreeBSD is very conservative, it's far from
bleeding edge.

When you say that spamc children run wild I presume you mean spamd
children. Are you using --round-robin with spamd? If so try using the
default scaling instead. When I was playing around with spamd I
noticed that round-robin caused the number of children to run away and
lock-up at "max-children"

Getting ready to upgrade here. I just now did a portsnap to update the
ports tree and:

smtpgate# cat /usr/ports/mail/p5-Mail-SpamAssassin/distinfo
MD5 (Mail-SpamAssassin-3.3.0.tar.gz) = 38078b07396c0ab92b46386bc70ef086

SIZE (Mail-SpamAssassin-3.3.0.tar.gz) = 1322429
smtpgate#

it shows version 3.3.0 here.

Short answer:

To apply updates automatically, string the commands together
("portsnap cron update").

royce@heffalump$ sudo portsnap cron update
Removing old files and directories... done.
Extracting new files:
/usr/ports/devel/bugzilla/
/usr/ports/mail/postfix26/
Building new INDEX files... done.
royce@heffalump$

or hush it with:

royce@heffalump$ sudo portsnap cron update >/dev/null
royce@heffalump$

Long details:

This is getting pretty OT, but here is some more info; non-FreeBSD
folk need not apply. :-)

With this family of utilities by Colin Percival (which includes the
OS-patching freebsd-update(8)), if you use only the 'cron' option,
there will only be output when there is a change. This lets you
schedule the check, only get notified when changes are actually
downloaded, and then choose when to act on them.

For portsnap(8), you may or may want to tack on a '> /dev/null' at the
end, since updates to the ports tree are happening all the time. I do
this, and I just let the weekly reports tell me when I have non-urgent
updates available in my installed ports
(weekly_status_pkg_enable="YES" in [/usr/local]/etc/periodic.conf). I
let portaudit(1) tell me daily if there are any vulnerabilities.

Some folks want to know about updates to their ports right away, so
they do something like this:

royce@heffalump$ portsnap cron update > /dev/null && portversion -v -L =
lsof-4.83,5 < needs updating (port has 4.84A,5)
mysql-server-5.0.89 < needs updating (port has 5.0.90)
nmap-5.21 < needs updating (port has 5.21_1)
royce@heffalump$

Other folks, especially those on low-bandwidth or metered connections,
don't want to download actual updates until there are changes to ports
that they care about. They use the '-I' option to just fetch the
index (which also just fetches deltas, very low-bandwidth), and then
compare the index with their installed ports to check for available
updates:

royce@heffalump$ portsnap cron -I > /dev/null && portversion -vL =
[same output as above]

Since portsnap deltas are relatively low-bandwidth, I prefer a full
daily sync so that I can casually install a new port and know that I'm
getting a version less than 24 hours old.

Share and Enjoy(TM). :-)

Royce

Quick question, if I do portsnap cron in the crontab, when do I do portsnap update?

Semi-OT, but portsnap(8) makes fetching the ports indexes no longer
necessary. portsnap is also orders of magnitude faster than
cvsup/csup, as it only sends diffs from the previously downloaded
snap, and those diffs are precalculated. It was written by Colin
Percival, the FreeBSD Security Officer, and so it is also quite
reliable. It's been part of the base OS since 6.2 or so. If you're
not using it, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for that, I am planning on upgrading that machine soon anyway, so
best to get all this ports stuff squared away first.

portversion get its version information from the index file. You need
to do a "make fetchindex" in the ports directory (or "make index" if you
have a lot of time on your hands).

OK, that's what I get for trusting portversion....

3.3.0 was available on my machine as of 19 Feb. I have no idea what portversion's problem is/was.

I commented out all the non-config stuff in local.cf, anything else I should check before I actually make deinstall; make reinstall?

OK, that's odd. I run csup /usr/supfile via cron every night and I have
been watching for SA. Other packages have been updating (I get a report
daily I can check).

I am running csup manually right now and looking at the output.

Nope, nothing coming through for SA.

supfile:
*default tag=RELENG_6_2
*default host=cvsup8.FreeBSD.org
*default prefix=/usr
*default base=/usr/local/etc/cvsup
*default release=cvs delete use-rel-suffix compress
ports-all tag=.
src-all

I'll try running it again with just a host I guess.

It's been in ports for about a month.

Really? I just did a update of the port tree and yet

  $ portversion p5-Mail-SpamAssassin
p5-Mail-SpamAssassin =
  $ where SpamAssassin
p5-Mail-SpamAssassin-3.2.5_4 is in mail/p5-Mail-SpamAssassin
mail/p5-Mail-SpamAssassin

On my system SA has not updated in ports to 3.3.0 yet....
