Currently Flink only support fixed-length integers. However, in many cases the values of the integer fields tend to be small, and we could reduce the size of serialized values by using [Variable length encoding|https://developers.google.com/protocol-buffers/docs/encoding#varints] and  [Zig-zag variable-length encoding|https://developers.google.com/protocol-buffers/docs/encoding#signed-integers].
