   This is a cherry-pick of #966 backporting the change to the 1.9.x branch.

   Per my comment on https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AVRO-2817 , this backports the fix in #966 to 1.9.x branch.
   
   I'm not sure if there will be a 1.9.3 release, but if there is, it would be nice to include this change.

   Per my comment on https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AVRO-2817 , this backports the fix in #966 to 1.9.x branch.
