Hi Henk,

I do not by any means want to seem argumentative with you over this
matter, again I respect the ip ban and am not going to ask you to remove
it. I would like to understand why this is happening with only this
host, which is why I am replying to you. As it stands the script used is
the same script used for all of the other projects mirrored with the
exception of Debian and we've yet to see the process go awry elsewhere.

The main difference between the other scripts and the apache script is
the rsync line:

apache:
  rsync -avz --delete-after --safe-links $remote $local >> $log

all others:
rsync -avz --delete-after --progress $remote $local

I did as promised remove the offending line from the script and the
crontab job was unchanged from its 12 hour cycle at 0 3,15 * * *.

I am trying to ensure that this doesn't happen on another upstream host
for which we use the same script, failing that a quick 3 line #! rsync
-avz --delete-after would seem to be the best alternative but being
blocked on the host for which we've had the issue gives no feedback.

I sat there and watched the log last night and saw nothing amiss other
than the length of the sync. Again I am not asking for the ip to be
unblocked just asking for some feedback or insight.

Best regards,

Donald Norwood

Hi Hank,

While I would like the ftp (and eventual rsync) to be used, I certainly
understand the uniform presentation for the project. Thanks for the
response.

Hi,

ftp: we prefer http mirrors and list ftp mirrors only if the mirror
only offers ftp, and is located in a country with only a few mirrors.
If you insist, I can add your ftp mirror to the list.

rsync: apache doesn't list rsync mirrors (yet).

Henk Penning

Hi Donald,

> I'm very curious as to why this only occurs with this host.

That's no mystery ; I said

> please fix your cronjob ; the IP will be unblocked
> if/when I see connects max two times a day.

You said :

> We have removed the if failure sleep portion of the mirror script and
> are pointing back at rsync.apache.org.

You were still blocked, and since you rsynced 39525 times, I assume
you didn't "removed the if failure sleep portion of the mirror script", as
you said you would.

I would have gladly unblocked your site if/when I had seen your mirror
connect once or twice a day ; it didn't, to say the least. We have now
no intention to unblock the IP.

Hi Henk,

I certainly understand your reasoning behind the ip ban. Could you send
me the log of these connections? I show the connection starting at 3:15
and ending at 6:24 which I assumed was from from a large update or
saturation on our end from other projects, but you are seeing more than
that.

We had been mirroring from University of Utah after your first email
and those connections were for 1 for 6 minutes and 1 for over an hour.
It wasnt until yesterday that I moved the mirror back to apache.org and
it seems to go connection or speed crazy with that host. I'm very
curious as to why this only occurs with this host.

Best Regards,

Donald Norwood

Some of the file type icons appear to be missing; see for example

It would look better with proper icons.
