Calcite graduation review

The Calcite project is considering graduation. A discussion on the dev list[1] is reaching consensus, and we will shortly start a vote on the dev list. It would be helpful if someone from the Incubator PMC could review.

Could a shepherd who is not previously familiar with the project please review the project and raise any issues that might prevent graduation?

Done[2].

I entered today’s date for tasks that were finished long ago.

Hey Julian
Can you please make sure that the projects status page is updated, seeing
new committers added and releases cut but these have not made it to the
projects status page. Thanks

One thing that was also recently discussed is to have podlings
self-assess their compliance with
https://community.apache.org/apache-way/apache-project-maturity-model.html

If Calcite volunteers to do that, that would be very cool IMO, as a
way to test the idea.

A wiki page that lists the maturity model items with a brief comment
from the podling and mentors about compliance would be very useful,
and its text can be included in the graduation vote.

As a mentor, I think that they are very ready to commit. There is a strong
commitment to diversity and to license hygiene in the project.

I was the one who suggested an outside mentor review. My thought is that
given the hullabaloo that accompanies some graduation votes, it would be
good to have somebody from a different incubator sub-culture to look at the
project.

My guess is that the best review would be by somebody very
Apache-experienced but who is unfamiliar with Calcite. Preferably, even
somebody who isn't from the Hadoop/Lucene tradition.

The particular things I would want to hear would be

- does it appear to be easy to approach the community?

- can development status be understood by outsiders and newcomers?

- all the things I don't know to ask for because I am too heavily rooted in
this sub-community.

This is the likely nearly the last chance for the incubator to have a
positive impact on this project and it would be nice if they could get as
wide a view as possible.

Agreed. I know the last time they reported, there was a strong feeling
that they were ready to graduate. I think I'm comfortable seeing this
through, since it's a pretty strong team on this podling.

I would like to hear from mentors on whether or not they agree. I see one
note regarding the majority of commits coming from a single contributor. I
think it was answered properly.

Making a flawless release is definitely not a graduation requirement, and I
don't think it would benefit the podling to voluntarily remain in the
Incubator for only that purpose.

What we should expect from graduating podlings is that they are conscientious
about licensing, responsive when issues are raised, and competent enough to
handle simple situations and seek guidance as needed. There will be numerous
opportunities down the road as a TLP to put those skills to use when
contributions are submitted which contain licensing glitches. :)

Hi,

Given the (minor) license issues with the last release, it might be better to make one more incubating release?

Thanks,
Justin
