state of the release

Hi,

our release was finally approved by the IPMC:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-general/201311.mbox/browser

Unfortunately, we were not completely prepared for this event, as we are still missing the distribution area to distribute the release artifacts. I've filed a JIRA to create it

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-6983

but since there are 110 other JIRAs in the state "Waiting for Infra", there has been no activity so far.

So maybe if we could all vote for the issue, it might catch Infra's attention a little earlier :)

Thanks,
Till

Yeah -- the RC post I looked over was immaculate. Kudos.

Sorry about that. I'm happy that I did manage to get the right links for the

I'd asked in the #asfinfra IRC channel earlier. Joe Schaefer, the same person
who'd fixed Allura, eventually saw my message and fixed VXQuery.

This is all happening because the infra area is a piecemeal mix of old and new
ways of getting stuff onto our main dist mirror. Joe checked in with me about
how to fix it and make it uniform. I'll be seeking a volunteer on
general@incubator tomorrow to commit a bunch of old releases into
dist.apache.org.

Just as I was about to file the issue I found that the vxquery directory appeared in the distribution area.
Maybe writing to the list helps in some magical ways ...

It looks like your fellow podling traveler Allura had a similar issue,
until Dave Brondsema wrote to infrastructure@apache and it got fixed.
Usually it's better to file a issue than write to the list, though. I
think that's justified at this point.

Thanks. The JIRA has been addressed and closed. Our release directory
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/incubator/vxquery
has been created and I've submitted our release artifacts via svn.

Following
http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#upload-ci
the artifacts should be pushed to
https://www.apache.org/dist/
immediately. However, I don't find a vxquery directory inside of
https://www.apache.org/dist/incubator/ .

Did I miss a step or is there something I should try to find out what happened?
Or is the best way to file another Infra ticket?

Thanks,
Till

even keel throughout the last few months.

Creating links to our mail archives is a little bit of a pain. That's a link
to all of November for general@incubator, which is a busy list. Here's the
permalink to the triumphant RESULT message:

However, because the links are long and occasionally cause problems with line
wrapping in email clients, personally I always use the URL shortener available
to all Apache committers at https://s.apache.org when creating links to embed
in email messages. Here's the shortened link to the RESULT post:

Second release could make sense, it may take some time to adjust infrastructure once you become a TLP (or pTLP)

Final approval for TLP can happen only once a month at the board meeting.

(a) finish the last release steps.
(b) role another release. If not done by Dec. 4 then skip.
(c) graduation votes
(d) TLP in December.

Dave

Hi,

I think that most of us agree that graduation to a TLP would be the right path.

From my point of view there are only 2 open questions right now:
1) Should we aim to graduate "all the way" immediately or should we become a pTLP?
2) Should we create a second incubator release before we attempt graduation (there has been quite a bit of development on the master branch while we were working on the release)?

Thanks,
Till

If VXQuery is to graduate as a TLP, there are some concerns that I think we
ought to address.

The presumptive PMC currently consists of five people, which is small. A PMC
with fewer than three active members cannot even make a successful release
vote. However, the Incubator has voted to recommend graduation with small
PMCs in the past, so it's not necessarily a blocker. It is good that VXQuery
has no single dominant developer and that contributions are spread out pretty
well.

My chief concern is whether VXQuery's small presumptive PMC has enough
collective ASF expertise to govern itself effectively as a TLP.

To be candid, the issue of offlist discussions raised in the "Transparency"
thread[1] is significant -- it's a problem that they weren't nipped in the
bud. The requirement that all project decisions must be made on the dev list
is common knowledge around the ASF, and we need the future VXQuery PMC to be
aware of such things.

On a similar note, while it's encouraging that you're all still here after
four years, I'm concerned that VXQuery has stalled a number of times. Yes,
the Incubator PMC has not always very responsive, but it is always possible to
bull through -- and that's the kind of resolve you need to succeed as an
Apache project, that's the *norm* for successful TLPs. As Martin Dashorst
recently put it on general@incubator:

    http://s.apache.org/UFm

Self governance doesn't just mean the ability to answer messages on
users@ or to have civil discourse on dev@, or the ability to commit
code without having too many merge conflicts. It also means taking
responsibility for your project. You are responsible for getting a
release out of the door: it is your project! You are responsible for
ensuring the status page is completely checked off: it is your
project! You are responsible for completing a trademark search: it is
your project! You are responsible for filing a board report on time:
    it is your project!

Till knows his way around Apache pretty well by now, having served as release
manager and having been VXQuery's point person when dealing with Infra and
Legal Affairs. Cezar has plenty of Apache expertise, as well, but does not
seem very active. With only five potential PPMC members, VXQuery will do
better as a TLP if more community members gain additional familiarity with the
ASF's traditions, institutions, and infrastructure.

My first suggestion for those who might wish to increase their Apache-fu is to
subscribe to general-interest ASF mailing lists:

*   general@incubator
*   legal-discuss@apache
*   infrastructure@apache[3]
*   community@apache

Another good activity would be for VXQuery to make a second incubating release
with someone other than Till serving as RM.

More generally, it would be good for people other than Till attend to various
tasks such as updating the VXQuery website (thus having to learn how the
Apache CMS works), maintaining the Incubation status page[4], filing quarterly
reports, running votes and so on.

Signing up to be an Incubator shepherd[3] for a little while would be
educational, as you get to see other podlings in action.

Attending Apache-themed events such as ApacheCon is also a great way to learn;
The next ApacheCon is currently in the planning stages and has no firm date or
location just yet, but you have the chance to attend any event where other
Apache people are around, though, real-time conversations can deliver a lot of
info very quickly.

Theoretically, reading the documentation under http://www.apache.org/dev and
http://incubator.apache.org/ can help. Be warned, though: it's pretty
meandering and verbose, so you have to be the kind of person who is adept at
consuming such documentation methodically.

Finally, I have a suggestion for an activity which would put you on the fast
track: serve as the Incubator's guinea pig for the PPMC-binding-votes
experiment (which is what the pTLP proposal has morphed into)[5]. I'll
address that in another thread.

[Sorry for the truncated message from some minutes ago.. Was pressing
"Send" accidentally. So to continue:]

As a reminder: Publishing this release will be taken as a sign, that the
project is ready for graduation.

So, it seems about time to discuss our further intentions. Our options, as
I see them, are:

1.) Graduate as a new TLP, as ant has already suggested. I would expect
that the board would approve a corresponding request. (After minor
discussions, perhaps.)
2.) Become a subproject of another TLP. Problem is, that there is no
obvious choice, that would welcome VXQuery. For example, speaking as a
member of Apache Commons, I'd personally reject VXQuery as not sufficiently
generic. I'd expect at least applicability on DOM nodes, or something like
that, with some examples demonstrating the use as part of the documentation.

The main difference between these options: As a TLP, there's addidional
work to do. With option 2, that would be done by the parent project. Mainly
like it was, except that Incubator was the TLP so far. Additional jobs to
do:

- Elect a chair. (I'd suggest Till, as he did an excellent job so far in
adapting to the Apache policies, acting as a release manager, and so on.)
- Elect a PMC.

[Sorry for the truncated message from some minutes ago.. Was pressing

Mainly

I didn't check, whether those are the same files that we voted on. Someone
should compare the checksums. Till, could you please be so kind and do
that? You'll find them on /www/www.apache.org/dist/incubator/vxquery on
people.apache.org.

Thanks,

I received a message from announce@a.o that the moderators did not act on
my message and that I should either repost or contact the moderators. As
I've also subscribed to general@i.a.o with my apache.org e-mail address, I
opted for re-sending to announcement to general@i.a.o and
announce@a.o.I've also sent mail to announce-owner asking if the
announcement as such is
ok.

The post to general went through now and I'm hoping that announce will get
it as well this time.

I don't think you can check. As far as I know, you did everything right,

because if people follow the instructions and stuff doesn't work out, the IPMC

Is there a way I can check if it's still in the moderation queue (or if it ever arrived there)?

Yes, that seems to be the case. I'm not sure who moderates

The only reason why I'm holding off is that I would like to have a website with
a download link for our first "publicity event". It's not that I'm seriously
assuming that there will be a huge number of visitors, but I'd like to make life

BTW, are there Apache-wide statistics on the website visitors or does every

Yes, those 2 steps are still on my list.

I have verified that the release archive on one mirror is indeed the one we voted on and I've checked and compared the checksums with those in the vote thread and those in http://www.apache.org/dist/incubator/vxquery/0.2-incubating/.

Now I've started to merge the changes from the release branch into the master branch. Unfortunately there we a few conflicting changes in the build files, so there a little work to be done there. Once that's done I'll update the website from the master branch and subsequently send out the announcement e-mails.

The release is already on the mirrors, but there are at least two more actions
to take.

First, the VXQuery website must be updated so that the release is easy to
find and download.

Second, a release announcement should be sent to vxquery-dev@incubator,
general@incubator, and announce@apache.

    http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#announcements
    http://www.apache.org/foundation/mailinglists.html#foundation-announce

Release announcements should include a brief high-level description of the
project, in addition to a summary of what has changed since the last release.
Additionally, the Incubator requires that the announcement contain the
incubation disclaimer. Links should be provided to the VXQuery download page
-- not the master mirror at www.apache.org/dist.

Announcements should be sent from an @apache.org
address (I believe this is required for announce@apache). Following
convention, the subject header for this release would be something like
"[ANNOUNCE] Apache VXQuery 0.2-incubating released".

Releases are advertising -- an opportunity to engage with users and potential
developers. It is important to take every advantage of them.

Note that it is important to wait 24 hours after the release hits the master
mirror at www.apache.org/dist/ to send out announcements in order for the
artifacts to propagate to the all mirrors. For this release, those 24 hours
have already elapsed, so we're free and clear as soon as suitable announcement
text is drawn up.

Hi Jochen,

Just to confirm, I see the 0.2-incubating release in

complete the act of publishing the release? Is there anything that
remains to be done to publish this release?
