Apache Isis: project pre-proposal: looking for mentors and a sponsor
We're considering proposing a group of related open source projects to
the Apache Incubator. At an unconference a few weekends ago I met and
sounded out Bertrand Delacrataz and Lars Eilebrecht, who suggested a
brief posting here would be a good first step.
So: the Apache Isis (?) project will provide the ability to rapidly
develop domain-driven applications. Built on the Naked Objects
framework (http://nakedobjects.org) and a number of related sister
projects (http://starobjects.org), it allows full stack apps to be built
just by writing pojo domain objects. Technically, it's somewhat akin to
an ORM, but rather than just automatically persisting your objects, it
automatically provides all the other necessary layers. This means that
the development goes very very quickly, focusing on the bit that really
matters; the business application.
One particularly important aspect is the ability to customise the
generated UIs. The framework supports pluggable viewers running either
as webapps and RIA, and uses existing libraries such as Apache Wicket to
support customisation. The framework as a whole is customisable and
provides a plugin architecture to allow the other components to be
pluggable.
For some time Naked Objects, the framework, has elicited interest from
"early adopters", but our community remains small. We're hoping that
Apache will provide a platform by which we can grow our community into
the "early majority". We can demonstrate the commitment to do this (two
books have been written on Naked Objects). Until recently there were
just two main committers, both freelancer developers based in the UK.
Since then we have picked up three new committers (in Sweden, USA and
South Africa), two directly attributable to the publication of the
second of these books in Dec 2009.
From our understanding of the Apache process, our proposal will need
some mentors and a sponsor. Vincent Massol (Maven) has already offered,
as has James Carman (Wicket). We're hoping that this post might
interest a few more, in which case we'll post a formal project proposal.
Thanks for reading this, looking forward to your replies.

I think having new folks step up as mentors is great!
IIUC you have two ASF members volunteering as mentors - if they are
new to Incubator mentoring (I think it's the case?) it would be good
IMHO for someone who has already mentored other projects to join the
team. I don't have cycles to join ATM unfortunately.

Hi all,
I posted this yesterday, and got a couple of very positive reactions
which was great. Just wondering if there are any other views?
We do have two mentors, but I'm still hoping that a few more might step
forward before we formally post our project proposal. When I spoke to
Bertrand Delacrataz, he did mention that the incubator could do with a
few new mentors. So even if you've not mentored before, perhaps you
might like to take on that role to help us? I'm sure there would be
some sort of meta-mentoring that could be sorted out!?!
Thx

Hi Nour,
Thank you for the support, that's great. We'd be delighted to have you
on the committers team, I'm sure there's a place for you. As you can
see from the diagram on http://www.nakedobjects.org/plugins, the NO
architecture is quite pluggable; so if you have a particular pet
technology that you're interested in integrating, then it's relatively
straightforward to do so without having to understand the rest of the stack.
Just looked at your linkedin profile ... for example, building on your
OpenEJB experience, one thing might be to provide a new remoting
protocol, surfacing the NO metamodel via session beans.
In the meantime, please do join the nakedobjects contributors list
(mailto:nakedobjects-contributors@lists.sourceforge.net), and we look
forward to having you onboard.
Cheers

Hi Niclas,
Thanks for the 'general' support, much appreciated (and I think Rob has
approved you to our current mailing list).
We have already drafted our project proposal, and do appreciate this all
might come to nought; but hopefully not given yours and Mohammed's
encouraging responses.
Cheers

I think that this is a very interesting project and looked at it
several times. Unfortunately, I don't have the cycles to take on
Mentoring at this time, just showing general support for you to move
on, i.e. get a Champion and together pen the formal proposal, which
most people here would use to gauge the feasibility. Risk of not being
accepted after putting in a lot of work is there, but knowing this
project I think a well formulated proposal will make it a
no-brainer....

Ulrich,
Likewise, we'd love to have your input. Drop me a line with your
SourceForge username and I'll get you set up.
Not only has Dan written a Wicket viewer, but we have also previously
created a very lightweight web framework of our own called Scimpi.
Look forward to discussing you ideas.

Re: Apache Isis: project pre-proposal: looking for mentors and a
sponsor

Hi Uli,
That would be very cool. I've been working on a Wicket integration, as
my post below says, which is coming on very nicely. So I think a
Tapestry integration would equally work well. Especially since - I
imagine - you presumably have Tapestry experience whereas I am learning
Wicket as I go...
Why don't you subscribe to the current NOF committers mailing list and
we'll take it offline in terms of getting you involved? Details are at
the bottom left of the http://nakedobjects.org/ home page.
Cheers
Dan
PS: You might also help us review our Apache project proposal before we
post it here?

I'm especially interested in a Tapestry integration ;). You might want to consider me as a committer...

The latest release of RestEasy changed their license to Apache license so if
you update, that wouldn't be an issue.
That said, I would still recommend either Apache CXF or Apache Wink which are
both good JAX-RS compliant implementations developed here at Apache.

Thanks for the feedback; which means that (a) we should have better info
on the NOF/Isis website, and (b) I should include it in the incubator
proposal.
But to answer your question right here:
* Naked Objects core (http://www.nakedobjects.org/core) has very few
dependencies; indeed when originally written it depended only on crimson
and on log4j, which is why I was able to cross-compile it to .NET as a
J# project from which the commercial .NET version eventually emerged.
* right now the core depends on Apache commons, and I've recently
started using google collections since it's so nice. We've also got a
discussion going on to start using Google Guice in order to remove some
of the boilerplate, though a refinement of that will be to use
JSR299/330 annotations.
* Another thing for the roadmap is to introduce instrumentation,
probably via JMX. Another possibility is to expose more clearly the
transactional boundaries so that we can leverage JTA services (at the
moment the transaction management stuff is pretty much home grown); this
will allow for transactional domain services.
The plugins ((http://www.nakedobjects.org/plugins) and the sister
projects (http://starobjects.org) do have more dependencies:
* the berkeleyDB persistor is a persistor for Oracle Berkely
* the JPA persistor uses Hiberate under the covers; one of the tasks
during incubation will be to replace this with OpenJPA (since Hibernate
is LGPL)
* the Wicket viewer uses Apache Wicket, obviously
* the RESTful viewer uses JBoss RestEasy; again I'll need to change this
to an Apache-license compatible library (probably Jersey)
One of the things that's nice about the architecture is that it's easy
to add in new viewers/persistors based on XYZ technology. One of the
commentators here (Ulrich) has mentioned an interest in a Tapestry
viewer, which would be great; I'm also in discussion with someone
offline about a Vaadin viewer. I'm kinda hoping that during incubation
we might find someone who's might like to write a persistor based on one
of those trendy NoSQL databases such as CouchDB or MongoDB, or perhaps
Apache Cassandra or something from the Hadoop family
Hope that's useful (and hope that inspires people/you) to get involved,
Cheers

Sounds cool. We really miss a good DD framework here; at some point in
the past we had developed a domain driven ant/maven build plugin called
md4j [1]. Essentially the plugin was fed with hibernate mappings to
generate search and CRUD code that covered the business (EJBs) and web
(struts1/jsp2) tiers. It worked wonderfully but at some point we just
stopped having time to update it to newer framework versions.
Anyway, I checked out the provided URLs and I'm having a really hard
time understanding the plumbing used. Perhaps some examples would help
people (and me!) figure out if they are interested in participating.
