> winutils.exe is an abomination and should be killed with an axe.  We have encountered issues related to winutils.exe many times on many Hadoop distros.  The most common one is being unable to find it.  The second most common one is incorrect arguments being passed to winutils.exe by the calling program.  Because it is an external program, the compiler offers no help in preventing errors in formatting arguments.  A confounding problem is that the common log message complaining that winutils.exe was not found is often a red herring and leads to numerous blind-alley searches for issues that are not winutils-related.
