Derby Logo?

Hi,

I thought it would be a lot of fun and increase awareness around Derby
if we had an official "mascot" or logo that represented Apache Derby.

I'd like to propose we have a logo contest where folks can submit
entries to come up with an image for Derby.

I've looked around at the SpamAssassin, Geronimo and FOP sites to see
how they conducted their logo contests.

SpamAssassin logo site: http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/LogoContest
Geronimo logo site:http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/LogoContest
Fop logo site: http://xml.apache.org/fop/logocontest.html

Looking through their sites some of them had design requirements for the
image produced. For instance, SpamAssassin did not necessarily want
images of "blood or death" associated with their logo. What about for
Derby - do we want the 'Derby' name in the logo?

Do we want to have any design requirements or restrictions on the image
we choose for Derby, or shall we leave it wide open?
What does a Derby look like? ;-)

What about integrating the Apache feather image into the logo somehow?

Some other questions to consider:

   Do we want the images in a specific format?
     Some of the other projects had an SVG format requirement.

   How should we submit our images?
    To the mailing list(s) or upload them ... etc?

   Who will judge the entries?
    Everyone gets an equal vote and this determines the winner?
    Everyone gets a vote but a subset of folks pick the winner?
    Other thoughts?

What do folks think? Shall we have a contest?

No need for us to use the Apache feather - just a thought, but
if people want to use it they could.

I've updated the page to reflect the entries from late yesterday through
today. If I've missed your entry, please let me know :-)

Also, I did not put them on the page in the order they were submitted to
the mailing list, just the order I felt like doing it in.

Could someone please update the logo_contest.xml page using the
attached logo_dec09.tar?

It contains:

logo_contest.xml
5 image files

Thanks,

Susan

All of these entries are great! I'll wait for all the submissions from
the day, update the web page, and then ask someone to commit the updated
page the next day.

I've created a page that can be used for the Derby web site called
logo_contest.xml. Attached is logo.tar which contains this file and the
first entry from Andrej as logo_entry_1.jpg. logo_contest.xml refers
to the image in the standard forrest place for images, the
resources/images directory under the documentation directory.

Below is the change I made to site.xml to include the Logo Contest as
part of the 'Home' tab, if that's possible.

   <community label="Community" tab="home">
     <derby_comm  label="Get Involved!" href="derby_comm.html"/>
     <derby_mail  label="Mailing Lists" href="derby_mail.html"/>
     <derby_bugs  label="BUGS" href="DerbyBugGuidelines.html"/>
     <derby_todo  label="To-Do" href="DerbyToDo.html"/>
     <derby_int label="Integration Topics" href="papers/" />
     <derby_logo label="Logo Contest" href="logo_contest.html" />
   </community>

Could a committer put this on the Derby web site please?

Thanks,

Susan

It looks like I need to come up with a page for the Derby web site
where the entries can be placed. I'll work on one and ask a committer
to put it up. Especially given some folks are having a hard time
viewing the image.

I would say leave it open...
I have drafted the attached logo which I can explain in the following way:
- lines are like tracks, letters are like horses
- lines are coloured which means wide use
- letters at different levels can also mean a melody (although then lines
should be horizontally)..because Derby indeed functions like a melody.

Pro et contra?

I'm thinking either the hat or the Kentucky (though a derby hat would
be pretty cool as a stylized logo...)

Feather in the hat?

There needs to be format requirements: if only to make sure the judges
(whomever they might be) have the equipment to view the submitted
images.

Mailing list problems: stuffing inboxes. Uploading problems: where to?
