Flex Usage Statistics

Hi there,

Because the last two month had been most turbulent times
in my career as Flex developer, I thought it would be a good
idea to recap where Flex application development stands
today. Therefore I decided to start a little survey asking three
main questions to the Flex community:

Question 1:
How many MXML files do you have in your latest Flex projects?

Question 2:
Which Model-View-Controller (MVC) Microarchitectures have you used in
your Flex projects?

Question 2.1 (Only Optional):
In case you have used other MVC Microarchitectures ... Could you
please provide the Name & the Link to these MVC Microarchitectures?

Question 3:
Which Cairngorm 3 Libraries have you used in your Flex projects?

The results of this survey can be found here:

http://code.google.com/p/masuland/wiki/Statistics

...

These results will be part of another discussion which I
am currently working on called "What's wrong with Flex?":

http://code.google.com/p/masuland/wiki/WhatsWrongWithFlex

As an "Initial Committer", of cause, I am hoping that these issues,
I am seeing in Flex development, will be improved in a forthcoming
version of Flex.

Kind regards,

Sebastian Mohr

Apache infrastructure team will set up JIRA. Then we will attempt to port
existing Flex SDK issues for Adobe JIRA. That is considered to be a painful
and time consuming process, but I don't think the community can help.

No problem -- like I said, I know you didn't do it intentionally, but that
is one of the things where people voting for features and collectivally
putting together the surveys would solve.

Re: Flex Usage Statistics

Thanks for the response, it doesn't have to be in the survey but thinking
about it there should be a page added with a list of Frameworks and Blogs
that are actively contributing to Flex. (parsley, rl, bojinx, swizz etc.)
I also
contribute work towards ND2D and Starling as well as my framework and
would be willing to contribute more if there is a user base. It
would go a long way to keeping the community lively. I believe developers
would be more inclined to continue contributing
third party frameworks and components to the flex framework if they have a
user base.
Apart from maintaining my framework for current clients I bet I would
loose interest in it if no one used it anymore :(.

Just a suggestion anyway.

@Wael Jammal

It's great to see your interest adding more
valueable data to my initialised survey. I could
reopening this survey within seconds, but, I have
some concerns that new values would blur the
correctness of the existing data - because now
results have been made public ... but if there
would be the interest to continue this survey
let me know.

Furthermore, if you are interested to start your
own survey you can set it up here for free:

Oh ... I see!

I thought I caught this case with this answer:

"I have developed my own MVC Microarchitecture(s)"

But you are right ... I should have added this answer, too:

"I don't use the MVC architectural design pattern in my Flex project(s)"

Sorry ... this was my first one shot survey :)

Re: Flex Usage Statistics

Posted by Nicholas Kwiatkowski <ni...@spoon.as>.
Understood, but the survey is making the grand assumption that /everybody/
is using some sort of MVC framework, which was my point. There is no out
on the survey, and some people (like myself) would simply not answer the
survey at all.

While in the Flex world, there is an overwhelming majority of the people
that use MVC style frameworks, that is not the case for 100% of the
population. I personally use an I-O style of programming, which is not
really MVC.

Re: Flex Usage Statistics

@Nick ... Thx for your comment. The intent of Question 2:

http://code.google.com/p/masuland/wiki/
Statistics#Question_2:_Which_Model-View-
Controller_(MVC)_Microarchitectures

... was definitely not to suggest a specific Microarchitecture. Instead,
it should only show which Microarchitecture has been used more often
in Flex developers past projects. And the result makes sense to me,
because, Cairngorm 2 and PureMVC where the first MVC
Microarchitecture frameworks for Flex.

It wasn't a "Which Microsarchitecture do you like the most?"
question. But I see your point that this could be misinterpreted
somehow ;)

Agreed, 100%.

Surveys outside of that can be swayed to however the creator wants it to
end up. For example, with all the people I talk to, Caringorm has been
barely a blip on anybody's radar for at least two years -- where this
survey shows a completely different story (and steers people to suggested
use of Caringorm). I doubt that was the author's intent, but it was pretty
glaring to me.

I consider all past data to be obsolete. The world is changing too fast.
Survey's tend to have a deadline. JIRA is an open ended survey. And even
then, folks in this project don't have to do what is popular. They can
submit a bug fix that is only bugging them as long as it doesn't break
anything else.

@Alex

Good point ... haven't thought about JIRA in that way ;) We'll see if
JIRA will do this job!

Do you know of any other surveys out there that have been taken so far?
Does Adobe have some internal surveys which can be made publicly
available?

I would want JIRA to be our constantly running survey. Folks put in issues,
the community votes on it. Serious discussion should probably happen on the
list.

In my last mail I forgot to mention the questions I have regarding my
survey ;)

http://code.google.com/p/masuland/wiki/Statistics

Are there any surveys out there which fortify the properness of my
first survey?
Do you see the need to make more surveys?
If there is a need to make more surveys, which questions would be
interesting to ask the community?
