   @hanm I have verified that with this patch it is possible to upgrade from 3.4 with empty snapshot to 3.6.0-SNAPSHOT.
   
   I have tried a cherrypick to branch-3.5 but there are conflicts (in docs and due to checkstyle stuff integrated in master).
   Can you please prepare a pull request against branch-3.5 ?
   
   This way as soon as @enixon reviews the patch again I can start preparing 3.5.6 release candidate ?
