Searching the Archives

I've tried on several occasions to search the Tapestry Mailing List archives on jakarta's site. Everyime I try it tells me that text search is not enabled. Is there any way to get that changed? Every question I have asked so far, I know has to have been asked before. And it would be a lot simpler if I or rather everyone could just search the archives. Going through each subject 1 by 1 takes way too long with as many posts as there are.

In fact, I bet this very question has been asked before. :)

Thanks for the info Erik. Google usually turns up what I want so I will
just use it for now.

I'm not sure which "mailing list" you mean (though I think you mean
Eyebrowse, which isn't linked from the page I sent). Please bring this
thread up at jakarta-general list to escalate it. While the outcome
of whatever improvements are made is directly related to the Tapestry
community, this discussion in tapestry-user isn't going to be seen by
most of the folks that may make a difference.

If there were only more hours in a day.....

The mailing list hosted at Jakarta is buggy. You try to follow threads
and find yourself reading messages that you did not click on. It's a
big mess and, in my opinion, should be dropped from the Tapestry site
if it can't be fixed. It's more frustrating than useful.

Just for reference (but I thought folks weighing in on this thread
already were familiar with these), there are several systems that
archive and provide search for Jakarta mailing lists:

	http://jakarta.apache.org/site/mail.html#archives

I find their search often weaker than I need, but usually good enough
to get me close to what I'm looking for.

RE: Searching the Archives

Posted by Shawn Church <sh...@boxity.com>.
I've actually been reading about Nutch over the last few days. I think the
issues this project is addressing are worthwhile, so I hope it gets through
incubation. I've been a fan and user of Lucene for the past several years
(about five I think), and I use it every time I have an excuse. My only
concern with Natch is the obvious infrastructure (hardware and bandwidth) it
would need to be viable.

I think there may be a component missing here however (beyond Nutch and
Lucene). I don't typically have much trouble finding answers myself (since
gmane, etc. is available), but my frustration is due more to not being able
to continue existing threads (unless you have access to your message store).
This can be worked around by starting a new thread, but this results in
incomplete threads ending with no resolution and it takes more work for a
user to follow related threads.

I suppose the ASF may not want to support a non-ASF-based bulletin board
(e.g. - phpBB), or there may be other issues I'm not aware of, but I think
something more interactive than pure email archival would be important. Not
to say that Nutch/Lucene couldn't crawl the archives, but it would be nice
if a higher-level application could provide at the least the ability to open
a message for reply. Other features (especially user administration) would
most likely need to be omitted, assuming the old mailing-list format must
continue to live. Is there a reason the mailing lists can't be replaced?
Any decent bulletin board should be able to deliver new posts (or at least
posting notifications) via email for users who want them.

It would be really nice if there existed a Tapestry-based bulletin board to
handle all of the ASF projects. On one hand, it seems a little silly to
reinvent the wheel (er, the open-source bulletin board), but if there was
interest and backing from the ASF directors and contributors, I might be
willing to develop it. If it were done well, it would be a great
opportunity to show off Tapestry and to prove its viability in the real
world. The TSS migration was nice, but I feel it was somewhat constrained
by customer requirements. As Howard mentioned the other day, 98% of
Tapestry applications are behind firewalls, so this might an opportunity to
bring it out.

Well... this most likely depend on what "fairly small" means... my own
little archive is well over half-a-million messages and ZOË doesn't
appear to have any problem handling it, even on my aging laptop.

In any case, this is all very much off topic as far as Tapestry itself
goes :)

I'm not trying to make invidious comparisons between a non existent
search front end and zoe. I just think that the zoe approach has in mind
the desk top user and probably fairly small archives. When I last used
zoe, a few months ago, it did collate and sort by some of the categories
I have mentioned, but it wasn't tremendously flexible, the user couldnt
combine sorts to gather their own results, for instance. Moreover,
usually no statistics would be provided as to how many were returned in
a category.
I think that part of the philosophy of zoe is that it tries to give the
user what it anticipates they want, but how does one know what that is
beyond making an attractive presentation of information? I think it is
right to build in information filtering and sorting. I would like to see
that extended in a more flexible way.
However, zoe pioneered as I understand it, an ad hoc message parsing and
mining for this sort of information that I think could be very useful.

And what precisely do you have in mind? :)

I bet ZOË is always looking for constructive ideas...

http://zoe.nu/

And -gasp- ZOË even has a mailing list all for itself:

http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/zoe-general

A searchable one at that:

It is actually something I have long realised there is a need for. At
the moment there is no straightforward way of extracting some of the
most interesting and useful information from the lists (I do mean
plural).
For instance some posters have interesting things to say that are spread
across different lists. It would be interesting to be able to follow
threads by poster.
It would also be a benefit to be able to identify interesting posts and
posters by different means, such as how often a person posts, or a
subject is posted about (this is more difficult).
There are other bits of knowledge that are latent in the lists that
could be made explicit. For instance newbie questions lead into an
aspect of a project from the less complex to the more complex, so it
could be interesting to make newbie threads available for others. These
may become automatic candidates for a faq as well?
I'm sure there are other points. Some of these have been touched on in
Zoe, geographical location of the poster, the nature of the organisation
from which the post comes, but not in quite the same systematic way I
have in mind.
Some may object that this is intrusive, but, hey, we are dicing and
slicing information and I reckon that if we don't do it others will.
>
> Is there no way to Google into the archives somehow?

You mean put archives online so that google finds them?
I don't know if that doesn't happen with the mailing list already, it
must do.
But google can't provide what we could as above.
It does deem to me to be a project whose time has come!

Re: Searching the Archives

Posted by "seloha ." <se...@hotmail.com>.
I was also having a similar problem with the tapsetry mail archive when
referencing when referencing the list through jakarta (i.e.
http://jakarta.apache.org/site/mail2.html#Tapestry) which points to
http://mail-archives.apache.org/eyebrowse/SummarizeList?listId=88. This
seems to have ceased operation.

Reference to archives at bottom of
http://jakarta.apache.org/tapestry/index.html under community points to
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.tapestry.user. At the bottom of this
page is search.

This works and I think maybe the http://jakarta.apache.org/site/mail2.html
should be updated?

Hope this is helpful.

>>I
>>have them handy and searchable for as long as I've been on the

>>Otherwise I use Google and if that fails I just ask what may have
>>already been asked before. I'm not very familiar with all the
>>archives
>>that are out there and how they are searchable - but the raw e-mail
>>archives are available (somehow, not sure how without researching
>>it

>>
>>Yeah, I probably should have a good answer to this being a search

>>but I just haven't had a personal itch to scratch with it.

Re: Searching the Archives

I have forwarded this message over to the nutch-dev@incubator list. It
would be great if Nutch were used to crawl and mine the e-mail
archives. We have the technology (Lucene and Nutch), we just need
someone to put it together. Eyebrowse is a system that uses Lucene to
do this, but I've heard nothing but frustrating things about it from
the Apache infrastructure folks.

Is there no way to Google into the archives somehow?

As for my setup - my e-mail is on IMAP, so I have it handy from home
and work or wherever I tune in to it.
