Null Sender on Bounce

I'm attempting to move up to the latest 2.2 development build.
Everything seems to working except for one thing. I have it configured
to send a bounce when a message is received for an invalid address. The
bounce gets into a "relay-denied" state and also has a null sender.
I've got all the log flags set to DEBUG, but I'm not getting a lot of
helpful info.

I assume I have made some kind of configuration error. But I'm not sure
what I could have done. The <postmaster> tag is set correctly. And I'm
using the Bounce tag as-is from the default, only uncommented.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Again, it is on 2.2.0a17
build.

Jerry

RE: Null Sender on Bounce

Posted by "Noel J. Bergman" <no...@devtech.com>.
Looks as if there are a couple of problems.

First, this:

 spoolmanager.transport: Checking Mail1081138395379-1-!57582-!155018 with
RemoteAddrNotInNetwork
 spoolmanager.transport: Servicing Mail1081138395379-1-!57582-!155018 by
ToProcessor Mailet
 spoolmanager: Processed Mail1081138395379-1-!57582-!155018 through
transport
 spoolmanager: Result was relay-denied

tells us that your RemoteAddrNotInNetwork didn't approve the remote host for
the bounce message. That's wrong. You don't need that matcher, since the
<authorizedAddresses> should handle it at the ingress, but even so it should
work. How is that configured? The default should allow 127.0.0.1, which is
what ought to be used for a bounce message.

Second, the NPE:

 spoolmanager.relay-denied: Servicing Mail1081138395379-1-!57582-!155018 by
ToRepository Mailet
 spoolmanager: Exception in processor <relay-denied>
 java.lang.NullPointerException
         at ToRepository.service(ToRepository.java:97)

Looks to indicate that the repository was null. The default configuration
is:

 <repositoryPath>file://var/mail/relay-denied/</repositoryPath>

which should be fine.

RE: Null Sender on Bounce

Posted by Vincenzo Gianferrari Pini <vi...@praxis.it>.
Jerry,

if you have <authRequired>true</authRequired>, you should comment out the RemoteAddrNotInNetwork matcher call.

In any case, the ip address in the RemoteAddrNotInNetwork, if applicable, should (if I recall well) contain not only 127.0.0.1 but also the real IP address(es) of the James machine.

Finally, as in your case it went (wrongly) to relay-denied, I don't know why you got an exception. This is another story to investigate.

Bye,

Vincenzo

RE: Null Sender on Bounce

Posted by J Malcolm <te...@malcolms.com>.
Noel,

Not sure if the relay-denied is the cause or the effect. My intention
was to have locally-generated messages to relay. Here is the smtp
block:

   <smtpserver enabled="true">
      <port>25</port>
      <handler>
         <helloName
autodetect="true">mailserver.jwmhosting.com</helloName>
         <connectiontimeout>360000</connectiontimeout>
         <authRequired>true</authRequired>
         <authorizedAddresses>127.0.0.0/8</authorizedAddresses>
         <maxmessagesize>0</maxmessagesize>
      </handler>
   </smtpserver>

Even with this config, I get relaying-denied on all mail issued from
localhost. Is there something I could have done with the mailet chain
that would override the smtp auth/authorized addresses above?

Below is the relevant section of the spooler log. This was a clean
install tonight. All I did was go through the config file and add a few
mailets (vitual user, antivirus, and a logging mailet) and set the
specific variables for my environment. Otherwise, it's the default
config.
