1.0 branch created

in anticipation of 

- the move of the repository to apache
- the 1.0 release

i have branched the tree with RELEASE_1_0

development continues on the HEAD branch, bugfixes
for 1.0 go to the RELEASE_1_0 branch

unless specified differently, a checkout will get you the HEAD
branch.

confused yet? im too, and its late.. off to harvard in the
morrow ;)
