I just tried it with 3.3.0 using the patch in r1095725.

It still crashes, but this time it's in:
connectionFactory = new activemq::core::ActiveMQConnectionFactory( brokerURI );

rather than createConnection().

On 3.3.0:
Debugging into it, it crashes in the ctor, on this line:
this->setBrokerURI( URI( uri ) );
