detect gzip content

hi there,

in some cases, the server returns gzip conten without setting  the correct
header (content-enconding), which causes the content-length to be
interpreted wrongly. is there a way to detect if the content is gzipped ?
 (browser seems to detect it correctly & gives the full-content, which is
not with wget)
