prettyprinters for xml?
do there exist any prettyprinter packages for xml, preferably
along the lines of the 'indent' tool for c?
odd question perhaps, but everyone i've asked about this has
mentioned stylesheets -- and all i've found have to do with
using them to transform xml into something else, rather than
reformatting it.

This should probably suit your needs;
XML Indent is a XML stream reformatter written in ANSI C. It is analogous to
GNU indent.

I've written one in flex/bison
Rod.
It also checks for well-formedness and validates against a DTD

'xmllint -format' works pretty well. xmllint is part of libxml2. Nice,
fast, good validation error messages, supports catalogs and xinclude.
