git mirror?

Hello,

I see that many Apache projects have an official git mirror
(http://git.apache.org/), it would be nice if UIMA could have one too.
It's much faster to get a copy of the repository with git clone than
having to use git-svn clone.

Having the git mirror also allows forking on Github, etc. which might
make developing patches easier for some people. Btw, OpenNLP is missing
from the list of mirrored projects, too.

Bye,
Jens

No, its just a read-only mirror of subversion.

+1 to fill a request.

No, contributors still need to provide patches, but they can use git
to create them.

See this link:

Hopefully pull request will be possible soon.

We are all part of the PMC. I suppose you mean the PMC-Chair (Marshall)?

I guess just ask infra (or whoever is responsible) if they can set
it up. If they require additional blessings from the PMC-Chair,
they'll probably say so.

Re: git mirror?

Hi, those aren't really exclusions, it just means that e.g. uimafit has
its own branches and tags. The standard setup is to mirror all branches
and tags in git (and it's quite important if you want to work on some
release branch, e.g.). They are not included as folders, branches and
tags in git are metadata.

When mirroring SVN to git you need to tell it where to find the branches
(including master, i.e. trunk) and tags, which is easy if your
repository follows the standard SVN layout. The parts I mention are
actually ignored by default, simply because uimafit, ruta, etc. are not
branches of sandbox or anything of that kind, so they are not part of
the standard SVN structure.

Is there any reason why do work with excludes on the sandbox and include
all svn management folders (tags, branches trunk) instead of just mirroring
trunk?

I'd somehow have a more cozy feeling without things being excluded.

Re: git mirror?

Posted by Jens Grivolla <j+...@grivolla.net>.
I don't think you can group them in that way. You could of course put
several repositories in a folder on your machine or on a server you use
to share git repositories, but that is not really a grouping at the git
level (it will put all your repositories at a common URL prefix, though).

Apache has a flat structure for its git repositories, as you can see at
http://git.apache.org/ and you can see that e.g. activemq uses the
activemq-* prefix. The repositories are also mirrored at github
(https://github.com/apache), and repositories there are only grouped by
user (in this case "apache").

So it seems that we would end up with adding the "uima-" prefix to the
names in SVN, except for uima-as and uima-ducc that already include the
prefix, right?

Let's just wait to see if we move things in SVN before asking for the
mirror.

There's already a uimaj-core (the core part of uimaj) :-)

Is there a way to drop the top level "uima-" by having everything be under some
top level "folder" (he said, showing his ignorance of Git conventions ;-) ) ?

I also changed uimacpp to uima-cpp for the same reason...

I was trying to always have a uima-* prefix, so I used uima-core instead
of uimaj, and uima-fit instead of uimafit. I'd rather use uima-uimafit
then to make it clear that it's part of the uima project.

Btw, I think it's probably a good thing to have smaller independent
repositories, as that makes it nicer to work with feature branches. I.e.
if I want to work on ConceptMapper, I only branch addons, not all the rest.

Re: git mirror?

Posted by Jens Grivolla <j+...@grivolla.net>.
Ok, AFAICS due to the project structure we would actually need a
separate mirror for each sub-project (uimaj, uimacpp, uima-as,
uima-addons, uima-sandbox, ...)

Also, some sub-projects don't purely follow the trunk, tags, branches
structure, such as sandbox which additionally contains other
sub-projects (uimafit, ruta, ...) which have their own
trunk, tags, branches structure. These would probably need to have their
own independent mirrors outside of uima-sandbox.

I have no idea how to deal with eclipse-packagings, and uima-as has an
additional depend-on-parent-pom-4 at the top level that seems weird.

Any comments?
