bugdb defaults?
Hmm. I just had a thought. The default state on the bugs.apache.org search
page is open. It strikes me that on this, and every other bug/support
database I've used, this has never been the option I've wanted to use.
If I'm searching for a report, and I don't know the number or other
significant information, it's likely that I'm searching to see if someone
else has reported my problem, and to see if it has been fixed. In fact,
this is the recommended use of the search engine when you submit a new PR.
But if I don't notice the default state is open, I'm likely to search for
a problem that has already been fixed, not find anything, and conclude
that it is an unknown problem and report it. This may be a contributing
factor to duplicated PRs.
The only reason I can think of to have the default state be open instead
of any is to limit the number of entries on the summary screen, but surely
we can easily display only, say, the first X results and ask for a
narrower search, or give a paging option.
Any thoughts?

Reverse sort by PR is the only one I'd use, I think.

I would hesitate to try and turn this turkey into a gold-plated turkey...
what we need is a real database-backed system, then the above is simply a
set of different SQL calls.

Hmm. No promises, but how would a 'limit to N hits' fly? And a
'sort in []ascending []descending order by []PR#, []state, []category, ...'
set of radio buttons?
The limit thing I can do easily; the sorting bit would take a bit more.
As for breaking the table up into multiples.. I'm of a couple of
different minds about that.

Umm, I don't know what it is like you you, but over here getting a large
number of hits can take forever. It would be nice if the browser could
start displaying hits as it gets them, but because it is in a table it
waits for the end of the table before displaying (ie4 does anyway). So
what would be really nice is if it could end and restart the table every,
say, 100 hits.
Also a sort option to get hits returned in reverse date (i.e. PR number)
order would be good, since most of the time I'm looking for recent hits
and having to wait ages (as above) to get to the end of the table is
annoying.

Fixed; the default search state is now 'any'. The output paging issue, or
multi-tabling, have not been addressed yet. A few more days..

It didn't get done according to that schedule, I'm afraid. I've been
going quite mad trying to wrap up one job (done, thankfully) and
preparing for the next one.
I'm semi-offline; if I don't see that this was already done, I'll fix
it in a moment.

Whatever happened to this, anyway? Going to bugs.apache.org still results
in a default state of open.

So we change it to 'any'. Hacking the script to do 'page n of m' stuff
would be a pain. I've been thinking of adding a 'count of problems
found' message at the top of the display, but haven't yet.
Sounds like a good idea to me, Alexei. Unless anyone can come up with
a reasonable argument to *not* do this, I'll make the changes on
Monday or (more likely) Tuesday.
