[jira] Created: (LUCENE-498) Remove old @jakarta.apache.org mailing lists

Remove old @jakarta.apache.org mailing lists
--------------------------------------------

         Key: LUCENE-498
         URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-498
     Project: Lucene - Java
        Type: Task
    Reporter: Otis Gospodnetic
    Priority: Minor

Could you please remove the old Lucene mailing lists:
lucene-dev@jakarta.apache.org
lucene-user@jakarta.apache.org
lucene-commits@jakarta.apache.org (I think this one existed)

Lucene lists have been running @lucene.apache.org for a while now, and these old lists are just confusing. Thanks!

Chris, I'm not sure if Apache INFRA people will do this for us, but we can ask, if we want this behaviour .... here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-726

I was actually hoping for bounces as a way to get people to move over to @lucene lists. Very few people use those @jakarta lists, and I just wanted to clean things up.

Doug, please update https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-726 if you don't want the lists to be just removed. I'd personally just email the -user list, say the @jakarta lists will be removed, and then get INFRA to remove them.

Otis

: Anyone using those addresses, even the new ones, without first
: signing up for the list is going to have some issues anyway. I
: moderate in a fair number of these sorts of messages, but I also
: reject recurring ones and request the sender sign up.

Perhaps the best course of action would be to keep the jakarta addresses
in existence, remove the existing forwards to the new addresses, and
change the "you must be subscribed" and "thank you for subscribing" auto
replies to say "this list has been replaced by _____ please subscribe to
it".

Otis,

Don't these all just forward to the corresponding @lucene.apache.org
lists? I think its best to keep old email addresses, like old urls,
around as long as possible, forwarding them to the current address.
These addresses are archived in lots of places (e.g., in the
documentation of old releases) and we don't want folks who try to use
them to get bounces.
