[VOTE] Release Apache NuttX (Incubating) 9.0.0 [RC1]
Hello all,
This is a call for a vote to release Apache NuttX (Incubating) version
9.0.0.
The Apache NuttX community has voted on and approved a proposal to release
Apache NuttX (Incubating) version 9.0.0.
We now kindly request the Incubator PMC members review and vote on this
incubator release.
NuttX is a real-time operating system (RTOS) with an emphasis on standards
compliance and small footprint. Scalable from 8-bit to 32-bit
microcontroller
environments, the primary governing standards in NuttX are Posix and ANSI
standards. Additional standard APIs from Unix and other common RTOS’s
(such as VxWorks) are adopted for functionality not available under these
standards, or for functionality that is not appropriate for deeply-embedded
environments (such as fork()).

I think it was said early on that under some circumstances, the ASF may
allow to host a mirror for code of "well-known" GPL'd tools if they are
important to a project. Indeed I think kconfig is a very important
development tool and also well-known as a number of well-known projects use
it. The port we use disappeared from the Internet some months ago, but
luckily before that happened Greg had the foresight to mirror it in his bit
bucket "tools" repository. This tool is pretty important to NuttX, so I
think we should figure out a way to host a copy of the sources. I don't
consider this as a fork or (worse) a hostile fork, especially since we
aren't trying to compete with another kconfig project; rather, we're just
trying to ensure the longevity of a tool that we (and other significant
projects) depend on, as things come and go on the internet over time.

Justin,
Really appreciate you doing this testing. It is on us to make the getting
started process much smoother and we will make that a priority for the next
release. In the meantime figuring out where we lead you wrong would be
helpful.

We certainly can look at what to do about the kconfig-frontend code. Some
distributions package it up, there is no brew install for it :/ it is GPL
code if I remember correctly so officially bringing it under the project
might be hard. I can look at if outside of the project we could maintain a
tap for it which would provide easier onboarding. I think that is the only
tool that we rely for all builds that is usually built from source. gperf
uboot-tools are fairly easy to get via other sources.
It does build on macOS (we do it in CI every day) so let's see what went
wrong.
For the kconfig-frontends:
$ mkdir buildtools
$ export NUTTXTOOLS=`pwd`/buildtools
$ export NUTTXTOOLS_PATH=$NUTTXTOOLS/bin:$NUTTXTOOLS/usr/bin
$ git clone https://bitbucket.org/nuttx/tools.git tools
$ cd tools/
$ cd kconfig-frontends
$ ./configure --prefix=$NUTTXTOOLS \
--enable-mconf --disable-gconf --disable-qconf
$ touch aclocal.m4 Makefile.in
$ make
$ make install
$ export PATH=$NUTTXTOOLS_PATH
For Flock
$ brew tap discoteq/discoteq
$ brew install flock
Thanks again,

Checked sigs and sums: Matched
Checked LICENSE and NOTICE: OK
Checked DISCLAIMER-WIP: OK
Tried to built from source:
Not easy but I finally succeeded. I used the dockerfile from here
https://github.com/apache/incubator-nuttx-testing/blob/master/docker/linux/Dockerfile
Changed the ubuntu version from 19.04 to 18.04 so I can successfully build
the image.
Generated config with: ./tools/configure.sh sim:nsh and then make, but got
an error and finally I found that I need to use -a to specify the directory
for nuttx-apps.
The build was pretty fast on X86 PC, and I logined to the simulated nuttx
board, tried several commands like 'ls' and 'echo', all fine, and
'poweroff' can successfully shutdown and quit.
Thanks.

Hey everyone!
Just wanted to reach out again and see if we could get some more people to
review this release, we still need two more votes.
We have a lot of support in the project for this release and it has a lot
of really important changes that we want to get out to our community.
I know this project is a little more complex to build due to the embedded
nature of it, but we do have some simulator targets that should
work without any hardware.
Thanks,
Brennan

Agreed. Please, if we could get our other mentors, Flavio, Junping,
and Mohammad, to check out our release artifacts and vote, and also I
wouldn't want to be limiting ourselves to just our mentors; I'd love
it if we'd see interest from a wider audience here in the incubator!
Thank you all for your great work and looking forward to your feedback
and votes!
Thanks,
Nathan

Yes, 72 hours is the minimum, you are free to wait a bit longer, especially
if you haven't gotten enough binding votes yet.
Let me take a look at the release artifacts.

Hey all,
We are about at the 72hr mark, but only one person from the IPMC has
reviewed and voted. We need two more to be able to close it out.
This is our first release under Apache and we would appreciate your review.
Thanks,
Brennan

Hi,
+1 (binding)
I checked:
- incubating in name
- signatures and hashes are fine
- DISCLAIMER (WIP) exists and mentions some issues
- LICENSE and NOTICE are OK
- As noted some ASF file do not have ASF headers. Given only 600 files out out 12,000 have ASF licenses there's still a bit of work here to go.
- No unexpected binary files
- Unable to compile from source
I think someone new to this would find it very hard to compile from source. I followed the instruction and they have improved, but there still a lot of assumptions and other tools need to setup it correctly (e.g kconfig-tweak / kconfig-conf and kconfig is in a seperate external repo and doesn’t seem to compile on OSX). If any of these tools are need to compile they really should be moved to the ASF if at all possible.
The NXP Restriction for SPIFI code mentioned in NOTICE is a concern. I know Mynewt had the same situation and got the license changed to drop that restriction.
Thanks,
Justin
