Any FAQ-ish info on building on AIX using gcc?

I'm a Xerces newbie trying to build on AIX using gcc, and it gets down 
to the end where the makeC++SharedLib_r script proclaims thusly:

ld: 0711-156 SEVERE ERROR: Binder command rename requires 2 arguments.
