It [was suggested|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ACCUMULO-1495?focusedCommentId=15478120&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-15478120] that query performance might be able to be improved if tservers spent less resources on doing compactions, which take away from resources they could be spending on handling queries. This is a very rough idea. It would need to be fleshed out a bit, with lots of experimentation and design discussion before pursuing.
