crimson classcast exception

Hi,

I'm trying to get Slide 1.0.16 working with Tomcat 4.0.1.  I am getting a
ClassCastException for org.apache.crimson.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl.
Looking at the archive I saw similar problems because because of
incompatibilities between crimson and xerces.  Tomcat 4.0.1 distributes a
xerces.jar so I tried removing it but still the same problem.  Any hints
would be greatly appreciated.  BTW, I'm also using jdk 1.4.
