   You'll probably run into problems with numerical stability but you can compute the variance with 
   
   ```sql
   select avg(pow(expression, 2)) - pow(avg(expression), 2)) 
   ```
   
   and the standard deviation 
   
   ```sql
   select sqrt(avg(pow(expression, 2)) - pow(avg(expression), 2))) 
   ```
