This is actually a more general issue effecting the super class as well. Probably the right way to solve 
this would be to use a IllegalArgumentException subclass (so that it can be specifically caught but 
retains backwards symantic compatibility). Probably should change all occasions where it occurs, not 
just this one.

Anyone else have any opinions on this?
