[PATCH] Support "dotted directories"

Some people (it seems) use directories with dots in instead of a tree
structure. This patch makes Ant understand that. I'd be interested to
know what people think of the practice, too.

Cheers,

Ben.

It sounds like an interesting idea for sure. But if you've had breakage
(which I'd expect, but it was good to have verficiation), then we'll leave
this be.

One of the things I'd like to do is to come up with a way for the task to be
a little more agnostic about the set up of the source directories, but the
only way I can think of doing so is for Ant to open the file, take a look at
the package, and then determine where it's compiled result is.

Anyway, we should talk more about this on ant-dev when it launches (in the
very very near future -- there will be an announce here when it happens).

No.

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but I find in practice it
breaks _so_ many things it simply isn't worth the effort (its proponents
suggest copying the tree to a traditional one whenever you want to do
anything to it, but I really can't see the point of that at all). So,
feel free to forget it.

Its used for several projects in Cryptix, FWIW. And it would probably be
a good idea if it didn't fail so universally :-). I tried it. I gave up.

Cheers,

Ben.

Ben -- I'm catching up from a long vacation and the flu. Did this patch make
it into Ant?

I'm actually not happy with it as it takes a potentially valid directory
name and munges it. Not that it's a valid directory from a package naming
perspective as dots aren't valid package characters since it's a seperator,
but....

Hmmm... I'm not -1, but I'm not convinced either.

As far as using dots in directory names, interesting -- I hadn't seen that
practice before. On first glance, I'm not totally thrilled with it, though I
have to admit a bias towards tree'd directories as that's the way the
classes end up and it's the convention that the Java Platform sources have
followed since day 1.
