pdf of docs

There was a rather old pdf of the docs in the dist/httpd/ directory. I
moved it to old, because it is really too out of date to be useful and I
received a complaint about it in the bug database. I don't think we have
any method of creating a decent pdf version of the docs.

Joshua.

I know that there are some mentions of it, as in what to expect in the
future. Where specifically did you see them?

The formatting for the directives is all bunched together on the
left hand side. It's very odd.

I wouldn't have expected that the 1.3 docs would have info on
2.0.  =)  -- justin

I have no idea how those are generated, but at a first glance they
looked reasonable. But I see that you are right. I was using xpdf, and
the problem is much clearer in acrobat.

You need to be more specific, as I don't know what you're seeing.

These are the 1.3 docs, as currently in CVS.

Looks good, but rough. =) (htmldoc is GPLed, so we can fix bugs
in the tool if need be.)

Sporadic notes:
- Bookmarks aren't done right. It stops too soon. Ideally, it
should only be an HTML page per bookmark. (Maybe a level
deeper, but I doubt we want that?)
- Whatever is happening around page 101 isn't nice.
- Is this Apache 2.0 or 1.3? I saw a note in there about Apache
  2.0?

But, it looks like it is a definite starting point. -- justin

And I also figured out how to do it without the links at all. If people
are going to print this (it's 500+ pages) then perhaps the links are
less than relevant.

My first cut at this is available at http://apacheadmin.com/docs.pdf.bz2
It's a little over 1MB bzipped, and nearly 2 uncompressed. There's a
little trouble with links - sometimes they get converted to "internal
link", which works, while other times they appear to get converted to
HTML references, which don't work. But apart from that, and some trouble
that it seemed to have with the tables in the mod_rewrite docs, it looks
like we can generate a PDF without much trouble. Please let me know what
you think.

OK, the best thing that I'm able to find at the moment is something
called htmldoc (http://www.easysw.com/htmldoc/) which does HTML->PDF
conversion. It looks good. The only thing that is non-obvious is how to
get it to do things in a sensible order, and I am having a little
trouble with links from one document to another. (It's all one PDF, but
links from one doc to another are not working correctly. I'll get it
eventually.)

So, it looks like, if we can agree on a sensible order for the docs, all
that we would have to maintain is a complete list of all of the files in
that preferred order, and someone (I'm volunteering) could do the
necessary magic (probably just a shell or Perl script, once I get this
figured out) to generate that document on demand.

More details as I have them.

I'm at this moment investigating a few HTML->PDF thingys that I found on
Freshmeat. I'll let y'all know if I find something useful. Not knowing
when the last PDF was generated, I'm not sure how much the docs have
changed since then, but I at least would like to think that we've made
some good improvements over the last few months. I'm currently on my own
little quest to make sure that docs have examples. I was offline for a
whole week, while in St. Louis, so it may be a little while before I
catch up and start committing stuff again.

Anyways, it would be nice if there was a nice way to generate a PDF
from the docs on a regular basis, and I'll see what I can find.

Justin,

It should be easy to get an English-language version by grepping further for "html:" or "html.en", but here's a starting point.

Woops. I had a fealing I might irritate the rodent ;-)

I did it because I have heard several complaints about the current pdf.
(Not your fault; just that the tools we have are bad.) My impression is
that many people are downloading that pdf and are dissappointed with what
they find. Admittedly, I have no way to know how many people downloaded it
and are perfectly happy with what they have. I just got sick of fielding
complaints about it.

I will move it back if you want (and change the name to make it even more
clear that it is not the current docs).

I don't have Acrobat handy, but I seem to remember that there was a way to
make it grab all the links from a single page in order. The problems only
start when you ask it to grab links several levels deep. Then it has no way
of knowing the proper order.

I did start on a site map at one point, but I never found a good way to do
it. (If someone could just provide a file with a linked listing of every
<title> in the docs, that would be a decent starting point. But I could
never find a program to generate that simple thing.)

Joshua.

I would *really* rather we didn't start deleting/moving stuff
until we have worthwhile replacements.. You've now put us
without any PDF docco anyone can reasonably find, with no
prospects for fixing the situation. :-) As for out-of-dateness..
has the docco *really* changed that much?

That file was created with Acrobat's Web-suck feature, and then
the pages were re-ordered. It was a PITA to be sure.

Indeed it would be (I know, having done it) -- but how often does
it need to be done?

I wouldn't bet on it. A third option would be to use the site-map
(which is a good idea, but more hours of work) into some form
that would be usable by FOP or some other of the Apache publishing
helpers.

Huge? Hmmm.... in theory, it shouldn't be (much) bigger than the source...

Ouch. Yes, that one's out, unless someone has insane amounts of time free :)

Alternatively, perhaps once the docs are in your XML format, a script could
generate a LaTeX form, which is then nice and easy to convert to PDF or
PostScript?

I have tried it. I don't think the results are worth distributing. It
winds up being HUGE, and more troublingly, completely out of order. Acrobat
has some algorithm to discover links and add them in, but it does not
correspond to what we would think of as a nature order. I have thought of
two potential solutions:

1. Manually reording each time we create a PDF. This would be hours of
work, and there is no way I am going to do it.

2. Create a comprehensive site-map that lists every page on the site in the
order we think they should appear. Then conceivably (I haven't tested this)
Acrobat could be instructed to put the pages in the order of the site-map.

Well, if someone has a copy of Acrobat, it can turn a snapshot of the WWW
site into a PDF, images, links and all. Alternatively, you could probably do
something via Postscript and Ghostscript?
