[jira] [Commented] (COUCHDB-1784) enable distcheck for VPATH builds

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COUCHDB-1784?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=13660945#comment-13660945 ]

Dave Cottlehuber commented on COUCHDB-1784:
-------------------------------------------

Looks like I'm still missing something -- if I run configure from a different directory to the source (in this case, source is generated from git export, so no SHA available), I also get:

You have configured Apache CouchDB, time to relax.

Run `make && sudo make install' to install.
make dist-gzip am__post_remove_distdir='@:'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `THANKS', needed by `distdir'. Stop.
make: *** [dist] Error 2

If I `touch thanks` in the VPATH build directory (not the source) then the build proceeds. Does this need fixing (and what is appropriate?) or have I just joined the dark side of unix?

Finally, I assume under our new git approach this needs a branch of its own and should be merged into 1.3.x and master respectively, with suitable NEWS/CHANGES/ changelog.rst additions.?

> VPATH doesn't work for distcheck due to license.skip being an absolute path.
