Using Ambari with vanilla Apache releases

I'd like to use Ambari to deploy a cluster using unpatched releases from
Apache projects using only ASF infrastructure.

It seems like the obvious way to get the former would be to add a stack for
BigTop. Does that sound reasonable?

For the latter, BigTop makes their repo files a part of what they publish
for a release. Could we do the same for Ambari proper? A stack that needed
artifacts specific to a vendor could still point to repos specific to that
vendor.

that'll be ideal -- personally I can be as flexible as needed, except
for afternoon on Tue (but I can do Tue before 4pm).

That would be perfect. Turns out I need a little bit more lead time to
host it at Pivotal, so if we can get together at HW office next week,
that'll be ideal -- personally I can be as flexible as needed, except
for afternoon on Tue (but I can do Tue before 4pm).

so, are we swapping out bigtop packaged rpms from the hdp ones as the
primary goal?

** ambari has **

- ui
- provisioning a Gluster or HDFS filesystem
- provisioning yarn + ecosystem
- monitoring
- some packaging via HDP

** bigtop has **

- provisioning hdfs (HCFS on the way)
- provisioning yarn + ecosystem
- packaging
- smoke tests
- bigpetstore :)

so lots of other (possibly more difficult) avenues for integration....

Re: Using Ambari with vanilla Apache releases

Posted by Roman Shaposhnik <ro...@shaposhnik.org>.
Guys, any chance we can get the ball rolling on folks
letting us know what date/time would work for them?

As for me, I'm available next week and on 5/5, 5/6.

What's the best time for the rest of the volunteers?

Thanks,
Roman.

Well, looks like we definitely have enough interest to make it happen.

Lets see what date is convenient for everybody. Also, if you guys
can go back to your companies and ask whether they'd be willing
to host the event -- that'll give us more options. Once I know the
date -- I'll ask about Pivotal hosting as well.

Personally, I'm reasonably flexible for the rest of April (not really
going anywhere).

Absolutely, ambari really deserves a shell.

How about the wiki change suggested by Yusaku? Should i create a jura issue for that as well?

Re: ambari-shell POC

The shell is indeed useful.

Pls. go ahead and create a Apache Ambari JIRA (at
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AMBARI) to integrate the shell into
Ambari. Looks like contrib/ambari-shell might be a good location.

Those two blueprint related commands would be good candidates. We should
also add some default blueprints to the Ambari package.

thanks

I’d also like to get suggestion which command to implement next.
My plan is:

- create blueprint
- create cluster from blueprint

that way one could automate the process of setting up a cluster.

Re: ambari-shell POC

Thanks Lajos.
It took me literally less than a minute to set this up on an existing
cluster to start playing around with it.
Nicely done! I like the context display, debug mode to show REST
calls, help menu, etc.
To start, we can create a wiki page on Ambari Wiki [1] and point to
the github repos. Do you want to go ahead and do that?
Also, do you want to move forward with integrating this shell and the
client into the Ambari code base?

ambari-shell POC

Posted by Lajos Papp <la...@sequenceiq.com>.
hi all,

We have open sourced our proof of concept of ambari-shell.
ambari-shell's aim is to provide an interactive command line tool which supports:

- all function available on Ambari web-app
- context aware command availability
- tab completion
- required/optional parameter support

Feel free to use it:

Yup - this part will especially interesting to see, considering Ambari's move
toward Python as a deployment mechanism.

Yessss....

- And On our end we can definetly help with leveraging of the hcfs side of things (provisioning ambari in a filesystem pluggable manner) or smoke testing of standard ambari components.

Hi!

I'd be more than happy to host at Pivotal's Palo Alto office in April.
I think the

Speaking of which: I've tried to pick the low hanging fruit around using
Ambari with Bigtop a few times and always ran into various issues on
the Ambari side. Now it is entirely possible that these are pilot errors,
but since I'm not Ambari expert I couldn't resolve those quickly enough.

Do you think there's enough interest in enabling this functionality so
that some of the Amabari folks and Bigtop folks can get together
for a hackathon of sorts and hash the issues out?

Once we have the minimum viable functionality we can get it from there.

Роман.

Speaking of which: I've tried to pick the low hanging fruit around using
Ambari with Bigtop a few times and always ran into various issues on
the Ambari side. Now it is entirely possible that these are pilot errors,
