[Issue 126247] New: Increase/reduce font size buttons gray out on boundary values

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126247

          Issue ID: 126247
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Increase/reduce font size buttons gray out on boundary
                    values
           Product: Impress
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: All
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: minor
          Priority: P4
         Component: ui
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: richard.lu@pqa.ca

Test environment: AOO411m6(Build:9775) - Rev. 1617669 2014-08-13 09:06:54
(Mi, 13 Aug 2014) on Windows 7 - 64 bit.

Found this issue while confirming issue 19621.

Steps to reproduce:
(1) Create a slide with 2 lines of text. Set the first line of text to be “6”
(at 6 points), Set the second line of text to be “96” (at 96 points).
(2) Select first line of text (6 points). Note the actual result.
(3) Select second line of text (96 points). Note the actual result.

Actual results:
When we select a text line, there are 2 places where the increase/decrease font
size buttons can be pressed. One is on the top menu ribbon, and the other one
is located in the text properties panel. For 6 points text, the reduce font
size button is greyed out in the text properties panel (see screenshot: 6
points text), and for 96 points text, the increase font size button is grayed
out in the text properties panel (see screenshot: 96 points text). However,
these buttons are enabled in the top menu ribbon.

The issue I observed is not something I would reasonably expect and is not
consistent with my experience with other comparable programs. In this case I
check with MS PowerPoint 2010 since it is a direct competitor to Impress. MS
PowerPoint 2010 do not have this issue.

OpenOffice Impress 4.1.1
Windows 7 Enterprise 64-Bit OS RAM 8.00 GB
HP Elitebook
I could reproduce the bug using the steps provided:
1. Create presentation in Impress
2. Create text and type line using 6- point font (or anything lower than 6
points) Reduce font button in the property box grays out (see example 1) Stays
available in tool bar
3. Type line using 96-point font (or anything greater) Increase font
button in property box grays out (see example 2) Stays available in tool bar

Follow up test performed
1 Followed steps 1 thru 3 above using varying fonts between 7 and 95 the
option increase or decrease font is available in tool bar and property box.
2 Followed steps 1 thru 3 above using different font names (types).
Increase/decrease font button greys out as above.
3 Followed steps 1 thru 3 above using different font names (multiple
options), color fonts (multiple options), bold, italic and underline.
Increase/decrease font button greys out as above.
4 Followed steps 1 thru 3 above using templates (Multiple variations).
Increase/decrease font button greys out as above.
5 Followed steps 1 thru 3 above using Fontworks (multiple options).
Increase/decrease font button greys out as above.
6 Followed steps 1thru 3 above using zoom (2% to 500%).
Increase/decrease font button greys out as above.
7 Created text in OpenOffice Writer 4.1.1. Text 6-point font and lower
and 96-point font and above has same failure in property box of
increase/decrease font button greys out.
8 Created text in OpenOffice Draw 4.1.1. Text 6-point font and lower and
96-point font and above has same failure in property box of increase/decrease
font button greys out.
9 Followed steps above 1 thru 3, If both lines are selected (highlighted)
increase in property box greyed out, no matter which order lines appear in (see
example 3)
10 Followed steps above 1 thru 3, added line of 32-point font, increase in
property box greyed out (see example 4), no matter which order lines appear in

Details on impact – This bug provides an inconsistent experience to users of
Impress, Writer, and Draw. A consumer would expect to have tools available no
matter which font size is selected.

Since we have had 3 different volunteers reproduce this issue I am marking it
as confirmed.

To all volunteers if you have not I would ask that you please send a
introductory mail to qa@openoffice.apache.org and request to be added to the qa
team. This will give you canconfirm privileges on bugzilla so that you can
confirm bugs yourself.

Environment details:
OpenOffice 4.1.1
AOO411m6(Build:9775) - Rev. 16176692014-08-13 09:06:54 (Mi, 13 Aug 2014)
Windows 7 64 bit, Dell latitude E7440 @ intel core i5, 1920x1080 display, 8GB
ram

I was able to reproduce the issue on my configuration as well by the steps
provided in the description. I would like to add also alternative steps to
reproduce, in order to clarify that having exactly those two lines with
different font sizes is not a critical condition:

1. Create a text with size of 6 points.
2. Verify the Font Reduce buttons in the top bar and on properties window ->
you can see that top bar’s button is enabled, but the properties window’s
reduce button is disabled.
3. Change a text to the size 96 points (or just create a new text with this
size).
4. Verify the Font Increase buttons in the top bar and on properties window ->
you can see that top bar’s button is enabled, but the properties window’s
reduce button is disabled.

Expected result:
Properties window Increase and Reduce buttons are also enabled on
above-mentioned boundary values.

I did a follow-up test also on the OpenOffice Writer and the same issue
reproduced there as well. So this is not just Impress-specific.

I did a follow-up test on the same configuration with competing product of
LibreOffice Impress version 4.4.2.2 and the issue did not reproduce there.
Judging by that fact, the issue was either not present on earlier versions
before the the fork of LibreOffice on 2010 or it was fixed on LibreOffice
afterwards.

I did not discover that having different fonts selected had any impact on the
reproducibility or to the seriousness of the failure. (During that I stumbled
upon other issue which has been also already reported - 126248).

Reproduced this issue running Macintosh 10.11.6 on MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch

OpenOffice 4.1.2
AOO412m3(Build: 9782) Rev 1709696

REPLICATION 1:
Create slide with text sized at 6 points. As previously reported, the Reduce
font button is grayed out in the Property box on right side of screen but
available in the toolbar at top . (See attached screenshot
MacImpress6pointfont.png).

However, I was able to decrease the font size to smaller than 6 using the
Reduce font button in the toolbar. So, although the functionality appears
unavailable in the property box, it is available in the toolbar.

REPLICATION 2:
Create slide with text sized at 96 points. As previously reported, the Increase
font button is grayed out in the Property box on right side of screen but
available in the toolbar at top. (See attached screenshot
MacImpress96pointfont.png).

However, I was able to increase the font size above 96 using the Increase font
button in the toolbar despite it being grayed out in the Property box.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
* Draw for Macintosh - The same inconsistent display is present (see attached
screenshots MacDraw6pointfont.png and MacDraw96pointfont.png) in Writer
documents as is the ability to change font size to values lower than 6 and
greater than 96.

* Writer for Macintosh - Once you add the Increase font/Reduce font to the
Formatting toolbar (View|Toolbars|Customize) you see the same inconsistent
display is present (see attached screenshots MacWriter6pointfont.png and
MacWriter96pointfont.png) as is the ability to change font size to values lower
than 6 and greater than 96.
