[Bug 124386] Improve Help for Version Selector

Members of our QA team requested a clarification of the "Version" field
used in our bugzilla instance. There are other terms that could need
some clarification too.

So before I request ASF-Infra to change our bugzilla installation by
using the patch [1], I'd like to ask for lazy consensus to request this
change in our bugzilla installation.

[1] https://issues.apache.org/ooo/attachment.cgi?id=82837&action=diff

In particular the help text for "version" should be changed from
"The version field defines the version of the software the bug was
found in."
to
"The oldest version of the software the bug can be found in.",

Also the help text for "assigned to" should be changed from
"The person in charge of resolving the ${terms.bug}."
to
"The person in charge of progressing the ${terms.bug}."
because we sometimes need more info, specific testing, etc. from others.

The help text for "operating system" should be changed from
"The operating system the $terms.bug was observed on."
to
"The operating systems the $terms.bug can be observed on."
because AOO problems are often impacting multiple platforms.

Since many entries in our bugzilla database are not about bugs, but
about new features or enhancements I'd also like to use the term "issue"
instead of "bug", when Bugzilla refers to such an entry.

Hi,

thank you for initiative, all changed texts portray current
understanding and use better than the old texts.

+1 for all

The question is whether that already is complete of whether we should
think about some other "problem areas". It might be useful to create a
temporary Wiki-Page where we collect and improve some Old / New" texts
(normal texts, without parch syntax). Or simply use
<https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/BUGZILLA/FAQ#How_to_improve_Bugzilla_Help_texts>
for a week or so and drop that to Wiki Archive when work has been done.
I think we should try to limit requests to infra team if possible.

This might be confusing, because we have a separate field for "QA
Contact". We've been using that field for the person who is testing
the feature.

Maybe, to be clear, "assigned to" could say something like "The
*developer* in charge of progressing..."

I'd like that too. But unfortunately this "auto-linkification" [1] isn't
directly configurable. We'd need to write a hook for it [2].

[1] http://www.bugzilla.org/docs/2.20/html/hintsandtips.html
[2] https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364254

But we'll need to provide such a hook a least when we switch to git
because autolinks from bugzilla into the repository are very valuable IMHO.

I agree with the proposed changes in general, and it would be nice if
Bugzilla still added automatic hyperlinks to "issue 123456" when used in
a comment (I believe it wasn't working any longer - it worked only for
the "bug 123456" pattern - some time ago; haven't checked recently).

OK, maybe not the best wording. ;-)
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I meant that the user can then understand better that all affected OSs
have to be considered.

If he sees the issue on his WinXP system, then it's likely a "Windows,
"All" issue. So, he should consider to choose this item - to cover all
other Windows OSs, too.

Bugzilla's "operating systems" selector currently doesn't allow the
choice of multiple items. In my experience this is quite sufficient:
Most bugs/features are platform independent and if not then usually
either a whole platform family (e.g. "all Windows", "all Unix") or a
very specific platform (e.g. "Windows Server 2003") are impacted by the
issue.

What about to write "All operating systems the ...? Then IMHO it is even
more clear that more items can/should be chosen.

I also did not know that changing the term "bug" to "issue" would cause
that all existing links to issues in Bugzilla comments break/vanish.

+1, for bringing the links back.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention and thanks to Rainer for

As far as I know we'd need to use a bugzilla hook for a more generic
"auto-linkification". The current changes only changed text templates.
Writing the hook seems not too difficult [1] but we haven't gotten
around to it.

Isn't it possible to use both? The recent change turns all "bug XXX"
into simple text, for example
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124366#c1 used to have
a link in "See bug 119006 for more information."
