This has had no activity for two and a half years, so I'm guessing no patch is
forthcoming.

I'm going to close this on the grounds that JUnit 4 has anyway dropped the
standalone GUI runners (under the assumption that most users will be running
tests from an IDE with its own GUI anyway). While it generally remains
compatible with JUnit 3, only junit.textui.TestRunner is included in release 4.

If anyone still has a strong interest in this, of course feel free to reopen.
