Wrong db version for src rpm rebuild
Hi,
I am trying to build svn 1.1.1 from source rpms on FC2.
I have read the detailed INSTALL from the tarball and have had only one
problem albeit a very strange one. My FC2 has rpm's for bdb called
db4-*-* and the src rpm's I downloaded are called db42-*-*.
I can't rpm -e the db4 ones because so many other packages are dependent
on them. I can't install the db42 ones either because they have the same
lib names!
The problem is that the subversion src.rpm complains that I don't have
db42-*-*. and the rpmbuild --rebuild fails.
Any suggestions on what I can do to address this?
( More details if neeed below. ignore otherwise)
I got the src rpms from summersoft.fay.ar.us in the whitebox-el-3
directory because an earlier post on how to build for FC2 told the
original poster to:
"Grab the 1.1.1 source RPM from the FC3 repository and rebuild it on
FC2. You'll also need the newer swig package. You'll need to force the
swig-devel installation as the subversion-1.0.2 RPM depends on it. Once
swig-devel is built and installed, you can then build subversion-1.1.1
and install it as an update over 1.0.2. "
And I didn't want to co the repo and couldn't find a better source for
src rpms'.
Thanks

As it happens, I'm updating Subversion on an FC2 system now and reproducing
my previous steps. I found I needed to install neon-devel and tcl-devel
("yum install neon-devel tcl-devel") in order to rebuild the updated swig
SRPM. I then rebuilt the new swig and found when attempting to install it:
[root@matureasskickers i386]# rpm -Uvh swig-1.3.21-6.i386.rpm
/etc/security/selinux/file_contexts: No such file or directory
error: Failed dependencies:
libswigpy.so is needed by (installed) subversion-1.0.9-1
I then issued "rpm -Uvh --nodeps swig-1.3.21-6.i386.rpm" to force the
install.
At this point I can rebuild and install subversion:
rpmbuild --rebuild subversion-1.1.1-1.1.src.rpm
su
cd ~buildmeister/RPMS/i386
rpm -Uvh subversion-1.1.1-1.1.i386.rpm

Thanks but I am more confused now. I don't REALLY want to build the
packages. I am running FC2 not FC3. I didn't think that I could get rpms
from the FC3 updates because of other possible links that I don't have.
I just want to upgrade to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 from rpms or even a build from
a tarball. I have many other clients that are FC2 so that is why I was
trying to rebuild a binary rpm. After 6 hours of messing with this (I
had already tried editing the spec file and that didn't work because I
need all the dependencies available to build a new rpm). The tigris
website downloads section doesn't even mention FC2 under Redhat it just
takes you to the summer site which has only whitebox. I don't even know
what whitebox is but it was the only place I could find src rpms.
I tried to rpm -Uv the subversion rpm you pointed me to and I get the
following:
error: Failed dependencies:
liblber-2.2.so.7()(64bit) is needed by subversion-1.1.1-1.1
libldap-2.2.so.7()(64bit) is needed by subversion-1.1.1-1.1
libswigpy.so.0()(64bit) is needed by subversion-1.1.1-1.1
subversion = 1.0.9-1 is needed by (installed)
subversion-perl-1.0.9-1
subversion = 1.0.9-1 is needed by (installed) mod_dav_svn-1.0.9-1
So, do I go get those lib's from FC3? They don't exist on my complete
install of FC2.
Thanks

First, Ken let me thank you for the time you took to respond to my post.
I really appreciate it. I think that I could rebuild the src.rpm's into
a binary rpm for my boxes now. Incidentally, I did want the x86_64 rpms
I have an Athlon 64.
Second, thank you Kris. I checked out the site
http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/ and sure enough, they already had
just what I needed. What a great site for rpm's. It is so comprehensive.
Open source isn't the best thing on the internet, open people are!

Usually, but not always due to versioned dependencies - which can often
be a massive pain to unravel. I've run into this a number of times on
past RH versions.

In this case, it's actually White Box Linux, one of a number of projects
that have taken the Red Hat .src.rpm packages for RHEL and rebuilt them
without a lot of the Red Hat branding. The first release is based on
RHEL3, which in turn is pretty much the official server-oriented version
of Red Hat Linux 9.

That's why I suggested rebuilding from the source RPM. You shouldn't need
any FC3 stuff if you use the source RPM except for the newer swig, and you
should build that from the source RPM as well.

Same here. As a rule, RPM's for later Red Hat versions can be used if you
build from the source RPM.
Let me know what happens when you build from the source RPM.

whitebox probably means "any" distro, the way a whitebox PC is a box with
no brand name built from generic parts.

That would be expected if you used a FC3 binary RPM, as it was originally
built and linked against FC3 packages. In fact, the "64bit" looks like you
pulled it from the x86_64 binary packages, which is probably not what you
want.

Why would you need to check out the repo? Just grab swig-1.3.21-6.src.rpm,
build it, force-upgrade it (I believe only subversion-1.0.2 depends on it,
but check to be safe by attempting upgrading without "-force" first), and
then build and install subversion-1.1.1-1.1.src.rpm from the FC3 repo.
swig can be found here:
<http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/3/i386/os/SRPMS/swig-1.3.21-6.src.rpm>
Subversion is here:

rpm -ivh the .src.rpm, then edit the .spec file so it uses your existing
BerkelyDB libs. I have no idea what sort of dangers might be inherent
in doing so (I've seen numerous warnings about certain BDB versions on
this list).

I would personally avoid those packages, as they replace too many things
- I've also had some rather odd errors come up attempting to rebuild
them. Check out Dag Wieers' apt/yum repo
(http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/) for reasonably current Subversion
packages. Fedora is still showing 1.1.1 in the listings, but 1.1.2 is
showing for el3 and so it should be available for Fedora "Real Soon
Now".
