"jakarta" name - (?vote?)

This not a topic that anyone wants to bring up:
Should jakarta.apache.org be changed to xyz.apache.org?

Tomcat and Struts are better types names.
"Jakarta" name has a a bit of political connotations, some PHB might see
as negtaive and has had for about a year now.
A non city name would be better.

Re: "jakarta" name - (?vote?)

Posted by Ted Husted <hu...@apache.org>.
As Nicola said, any Jakarta product is entitled to apply for top-level
project status with Apache. When this happens, the project (and it's
software products) also get a host name.

Whether a product is refered to as jakarta.apache.org/$product or
$project.apache.org is essentially up to the product's community and its
committers. They are the ones who decide whether they want to be a
top-level project or a Jakarta product. This approach follows the Apache
philosphy of keeping the core decision-making with the community
surrounding a product.

Jakarta is a strong brand name, and AFAIK people barely ever think about
the corresponding city.

If projects want to have their name.apache.org they can ask to become
top-level projects, as James and Avalon have done.

You think "Jakarta" has greater potential for misunderstanding than
"Apache"?

I don't really see how. We make java APIs and file format ports.
fileformats.apache.org will be initially just be POI with the committers
who have been here the longest renamed PMC members. Eventually it will
evolve to contain more.

Anyhow, nothing is set yet...more kicking around needs to be done. And I
want to wait until some dust clears before rolling with this. One thing is
the 2.0 release and 3.0 getting under way...

Yeah, this is related to the "reorganization" of jakarta, too.

We are now thinking about the new (FILEFORMATS) TLP, right?
Then, this news will be related to our project, more or less.

How about a request to Sun to let it be: java.apache.org? :)

Other names:

japache.apache.org
apachej.apache.org

but they're all pretty shitty.

If there can be magazines named Java, online sites called Java [JavaWorld
etc], why can't Jakarta just be called Apache's Java?

Would solve the jakarta vs tomcat vs apache brand issues.
