Applets in Portlets

Hello all:

I am trying to put some applets in to my portlets. All I got was the
"java.lang.ClassFormatError: Incompatible magic value 1008813135" error.
However, if I save the page in html or jsp and it showed the applets
inside portlets ok. What could be the cause?  I am using jdk and jre 1.5
on Tomcat and Jetspeed 2.1.

Please advise.
