Problems with Open Office
Hello,
I have recently tried downloading Apache Open Office and am having problems right at the start. It downloaded in a foreign language without my being able to alter the language to English. Can you send me info on how to correct this ASAP please. On the download page I wasn’t able to input the language preference, system used, or anything as the drop down menus for this were blank! Is this a bug in the system needing to be fixed? Will this downloaded, but not yet installed, version of Open Office effect my computer operations in any way. I’m a bit wary of downloading something that has bugs in it right at the download stage. Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Christopher O’Brian

you can download the us english version here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/4.1.1/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.1_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe/download
also, you may choose between different operating systems and languages here:
http://www.openoffice.org/download/other

that is unusual. your browser may be outdated or somehow misconfigured.

no.

You are right, it is no longer there. Marcus killed it last month:
http://markmail.org/message/m4fbcb3eikdckcgx
At that link you will find the reasons, together with some discussion
and code on how to redo it, but we didn't manage to get it done by
4.1.1. Unfortunately we'll have to wait that Marcus can take a look,
since logic in that page is still complex and generated from
https://www.openoffice.org/download/msg_prop_l10n_en.js
and other JavaScript files. So even adding a simple link needs multiple
changes at this moment, and it's better that someone who knows better
than me fixes it (that page has about 1 million hits per day).
Regards,
Andrea.

The URL is http://www.openoffice.org/download/other.html and you will
find it there as usual (it's linked from the main download box too).

Yes, it is JavaScript-generated too, for maintainability reasons. But
you'll see a whole thread on the dev list on how to make it automated
(since we need it, otherwise it gets unmaintainable) and not dependent
on JavaScript.

Indeed, this would be best described as "Alternative download link".
Fixed. Thanks. http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?view=revision&revision=1621587

Apache mirrors do not provide binaries. For occasional download needs,
use dist:
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.1/
But Apache Infra has asked us not to put it on the download page since
that server is not meant for wide distribution and it doesn't have the
needed bandwidth. The fact that noscript provides that link is wrong;
fixed with a direct link to SourceForge.

An assumption that we can make is that people who disable JavaScript
know their way around. So it now links to
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/
and a simplified version of your instructions is given.

Andrea.

for the community:
javascript-based input boxes have never been very reliable. where has gone the old plain link to <http://www.openoffice.org/download/other/>? it seems to employ an easier script and contains other valuable information. it would be quite precious in the original poster's case.
the only substitute i have found is the link 'Alternative download mirrors (binaries)' pointing to sourceforge's list of files. that list is good but not at all user-friendly, especially when compared with the </download/other> page. also, the link's name is misleading because it actually provides the same sourceforge-chosen mirror.
the link provided within the <noscript> tag, <http://www.apache.org/dyn/aoo-closer.cgi/openoffice/>, is not very reliable too. for my location, it suggested the <http://apache-mirror.rbc.ru/pub/apache/openoffice/> mirror, which does not host the binaries.
to sum up, i think what is desirable is an alternative download page based on plain html or server-side script. also, the link to <http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/> should be accompanied by some instructions like these:
from the list of files at the bottom of the page, navigate to the folder
<version>/binaries/<language>
and download the file
Apache_OpenOffice_<version>_<os>_<platform>_<installation_type>_<language>.<ext>
where
<version> is the version number (eg 4.1.1),
<language> is the code of your language (eg en-US),
<os> is the name of your operating system (Win, Linux or MacOS),
<platform> is 'x86' for 32-bit computers and 'x86-64' for 64-bit ones,
<installation_type> is 'install' for a full installation set and 'langpack' for a language pack (for linux there are also suffixes '-deb' and '-rpm' depending on the distribution you use)
and <ext> is the file extension (eg '.exe').

When I go to www.openoffice.org and click on "I want to download Apache
OpenOffice", I go to the Download Apache OpenOffice page, where there
are drop down lists for operating system, language and version. Do you
not see that? The direct link is
http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

First make sure you start at www.openoffice.org, the official site.
Allow javascript to be able to select language and platform
version..at least it works flawless here.
