[jira] [Created] (HADOOP-8313) Add the ability for MetricsRegistry to remove metrics

Elliott Clark created HADOOP-8313:
-------------------------------------

Summary: Add the ability for MetricsRegistry to remove metrics
                 Key: HADOOP-8313
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-8313
             Project: Hadoop Common
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: metrics
            Reporter: Elliott Clark

Currently HBase is exposing metrics about a region through org.apache.hadoop.metrics. As regions are moved around or deleted we will want to remove the metrics.

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-8313) Add the ability for MetricsRegistry to remove metrics

Alex Baranau commented on HADOOP-8313:

I think it makes sense to simply implement new "dynamic" metrics registry which allows adding & removing metrics in runtime. The reason is that "dynamic" one will have to be thread-safe w.r.t. to remove metric operation and hence use some concurrent collection to hold metrics map. For "static" registry it is not efficient to use concurrent collection underneath.

Common code can be extracted into the base class.

Thoughts?

Some work around this is done inside HBase project currently (HBASE-6411). But probably this should be placed in hadoop codebase.
