    Hi @dding3. Thanks for working on this! I was able to rebase and apply your patch to our build of Spark 2.1 to successfully compute the connected components of a graph with 5.2 billion vertices, 3.7 billion edges and 2.4 billion connected components. It took 832 iterations, but without your patch it stalled around iteration number 330.
    
    Can you please rebase your patch? I will take up a review of this PR when you've had a chance to rebase.
