When I typed "Übermittlung" in Writer, the spellchecker did not find it in the
dictionary and suggested "Ermittelung" as a correction. However, the correct
and only spelling is "Ermittlung" (which is in the dictionary, too).
By the way, "Übermittlung" is a very common German word, which should be in the
dictionary by default.

I don't think that this issue change this. You must contact the maintainer of
the extension.

Which dictionary do you use?
I use the extension German (de-DE frami) dictionaries.
There is 'Übermittlung' included. Concering 'Ermittelung' I wrote a mail to the
mantainer.

Where can I look up the name of the dictionary? I downloaded and installed the
official German version of OpenOffice 4.0.0, which includes the dictionary.

If the Extensionmanger shows this:
Deutsche (DE-frami) Rechtschreibung, Trennung, Thesaurus 2012.06.17
You have the actuel dictionary with 'Übermittlung'.
The maintainer of the Extensions wrote me, that 'Ermittlung' and 'Ermittelung'
are o.k. (e.g. Duden and other may not contain all words).
You can find more infos in the extensions. They are zipped.
If you cannot open them with an unpacker chnage the extension form oxt to zip.
Look at the files README and description.xml.
