0.90 release date estimate

Hi,

I'm trying to get a feeling for 0.90 release timing, so I looked at unresolved
JIRA issues marked for 0.90:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?reset=true&mode=hide&sorter/order=DESC&sorter/field=priority&resolution=-1&pid=12310753&fixfor=12313607

There are 143 of them right now. Would it be reasonable to assume 0.90 won't be
out until October or even November?

Thanks,
Otis

An HBase meetup in NY on the 11th would be awesome. I'll be coming over for
HW, arriving on Sunday 10th. The 12th will be packed, I'm sure, and I'm
leaving the 13th in the evening.

That sounds about right. Hopefully early October, right around Hadoop World. Good place for announcements. Maybe we could do a meetup or something the night before, October 11?

Anyone interested in speeding up the process, take a look at the outstanding JIRAs and get ready to start testing. The 0.89 release following the integration of the new master is going to need it (lots of new code).

+1 on general dates and milestones (two more 0.89 releases then legit RC by end of September).

Re: 0.90 release date estimate

I would suggest that first week in October.

Our guys are working on coprocessors (the minimum necessary bits to support server side extension) and role based access control support, built on top of coprocessors, in the regionservers and shell. By the end of September, if not earlier, they will have various patches up on Review Board for review for commit that update RPC and the regionservers incrementally.

Also I presume the shell support will be added in some pluggable manner.

The idea being that taking on the performance impact of an HBase-native access control feature is completely optional, and can be enabled, via the coprocessor extension framework, on a table-by-table basis.

Also we will endeavor to make HBase RPC pluggable enough so a single jar can be deployed on a Y! Secure Hadoop derived platform or a vanilla ASF derived one -- use some reflection and an additional config var in hbase-site.xml to switch between. This way HBase can also 1) interoperate on the secure platform variant; and 2) if so, take advantage of the strong authentication for its native access control function.

It would be great if a minimum-necessary-to-ship subset at least of these features can make it into 0.90 instead of 0.92 or whatever. Especially for Hadoop World.

Re: 0.90 release date estimate

We were hoping for a mid-september release candidate but I'm thinking
thats now looking more like the end of September so a release in
October sounds about right.

Here's my math:

Next week we'll put up another 0.89.x. A deadlock and a bunch of
other cleanups have been fixed since 0.89.20100726. This'll be 08/25
or so.

We'll then roll in the fat master rewrite patch and will probably do
another 0.89.x release -- mid-september -- to shake out low-hanging
fruit before we branch to cut a 0.90 release candidate at the end of
september.

The RC will do a few iterations and hopefully will be out mid- to
end-of-October. Would be sweet if it were done for hadoop world.

The above has probably been well salted with an engineer's optimism.
Adjust per your experience.
