I have been looking at the authentication requirement feature recently while rewriting a feature provided by Adobe AEM, which is making heavy use of sling authentication requirement.

While rewriting the auth-requirement related parts I got the impression that this cannot be completed with the performance and scalability goals we envision, without at the same time reviewing the auth-requirement parts in Sling.

This improvement request should be considered as "Epic" to start the discussion and collect ideas, have a target item for benchmark results and performance tests, and maybe even conclude with additional contributions that would ease management and maintenance of auth-requirement feature as we are looking for. 

Moving forward, I will try to pack those different topics into sub-tasks.
