Mac OS 9.1

I have to use java to access and modify excel spreadsheets (excel 97) on a mac os 9.1.  I've tried various options and HSSF seems to be my last resort.  Will it be MACOS 9.1 compatable?

I don't know.  I do know:

Office v.X runs HSSF generated file splendidly
HSSF runs excellently and even builds on OS X 10.2.x under both JDK 1.3 and
1.4.x
