I like to keep 2 versions there to avoid situations where a user can't get the 1.2 version due a user accessing an old cached downloads link and the mirrors having gotten updated.

It's OK to keep the old releases around for a week or so whilst the mirrors catch up, but after that point any non-current releases must be removed from dist [1].
This is vital for the proper functioning of the mirroring system; we cannot expect mirrors to continue carrying copies of obsolete releases for long.

You could potentially delete the old releases just after sending out the Announce mail.
The Announce mail should not be sent until most mirrors have had a chance to pick up the new release so there is already a wait required there.

Removed.. but remembering to come back a week later to delete the old version after each release is not going to be easy.
