MD5/SHA1 + ECCN?

As I understand it, md5/sha1 do not need ECCN notification.

Presuming so (Bill?), anyone mind me adding that to the FAQ entries on
that page?

You understand rightly.  Nor do any more sophisticated signature
generation mechanisms.  Only encryption.
