[email] [patch] refactoring

Hi,

I was working with the Fulcrum email stuff the other day and got side
tracked into the commons-email source. I did some basic refactoring to
make the class read cleaner and make it easier to extend (as I think
Fulcrum does; I put the patch together about a week ago so can't
remember off the top of my head).

If the commons-email devs could review the patch and commit it, I'd
appreciate it.
